The Griffin softball team played the first contest on the Seton Hill campus in 358 days as they opened their season with a doubleheader against Shippensburg. After the Raiders took game one by an 8-5 score, the Griffins responded with a 3-2 win in game two to earn the split.
Seton Hill started game one on the right foot as they got a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the first inning from
Lauren Bertig and then took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
Nina Grandey led off the inning by drawing a walk. She scored when
Jenna Osikowicz doubled to the left center field gap to put the Griffins in front 1-0.
Shippensburg tied the score at one in the top of the second inning. The Raiders added two more in the third inning and four in the fourth inning to build a 7-1 lead. The Griffins got two runs back in the bottom of the fourth.
Nichole McClendon singled to lead off the inning and scored when
Morgan Toal doubled.
Natalia Greco then singled to drive in Toal and trim the lead to 7-3. Shippensburg got one run back in the top of the fifth inning. SHU cut the lead to 8-5 with a two run homer from
Christiana Skrabak in the fifth inning.
Toal led the offense in game one with three hits. Osikowicz and McClendon each added two hits.
Logan Hartman pitched 3.2 innings of relief, giving up one run and one hit.
SHU got on the scoreboard first in game two in the third inning. After one out,
Samantha Estupinian singled. She later scored on an Osikowicz single to give SHU a 1-0 lead. Shippensburg got three straight hits to lead off the fourth inning and took a 2-1 lead over the Griffins.
Seton Hill responded right back with two runs in the bottom of the inning. With two outs, Skrabak doubled and scored on a Greco triple. Greco then scored on a wild pitch to put the Griffins in front 3-2. Griffin starter
Lauren Dellett got out of a bases loaded jam in the fifth with a strikeout to end the inning.
Dellett earned her first collegiate win with a complete game. She struck out nine and gave up seven hits.
SHU returns to action on Sunday afternoon when they host Wheeling University at 1 PM.
