Seton Hill closed out play in the D2CCA Division II Tip Off Classic at the Trailhead in Billings, Montana with an early morning matchup with the University of Mary on Sunday. The Griffins used three point shooting and a big advantage at the free throw line to earn their first win of the season with a 74-59 win over UMary. SHU is now 1-2 on the season.
UMary scored the first five points of the contest before the Griffins responded with back to back three pointers from
Rena Enterline and
Sonia Sarda as they took a 6-5 lead midway through the first quarter. Back to back threes from UMary allowed the Marauders to take a 14-12 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Teresa Haigh hit threes on back to back possessions to open the second quarter and give SHU an 18-14 lead. Midway through the quarter,
Katie Nolan drilled a three and followed it with a basket to give SHU a 23-20 lead. Late in the quarter, Sarda converted a layup and
Christiane Frye added a free throw as SHU took a 34-29 lead into the halftime break.
Two free throws from
Cheyenne Trest and a jumper from Nolan gave SHU their biggest lead of the contest to date at eight, 40-32, with 7:22 to play in the third. The Marauders got to within one twice in the quarter but three pointers from Sarda and Enterline near the end of the quarter allowed the Griffins to take a 55-50 lead into the fourth quarter.
Two more free throws from Trest and a three from Frye pushed the Griffins lead to 60-51 two minutes into the fourth quarter. SHU opened the quarter with a 14-3 run that allowed them to extend the lead to 15 points at 69-54 with 2:33 to play.
Nolan again led the Griffins in scoring with 19 points. Sarda had a great all around game with 18 points, six rebounds, six assists and two steals. Both Enterline and Frye each barely missed double figures, finishing with nine points.
SHU was 11-19 from three point land and 19-24 from the line in the contest.
The Griffins will next play in the PSAC/CIAA Challenge at IUP on Saturday and Sunday.
