In their final home match of the season, Seton Hill rallied to take the final two sets against Clarion and came away with a 3-2 win after outlasting the Eagles 19-17 in a thrilling fifth set.
It was the second five-set match in as many nights for the Griffins, who defeated UPJ Friday night 3-2. Saturday's match against Clarion was close in all five sets, In the first, a 5-0 spurt by Clarion erased a 14-10 SHU lead and neither team led by more than two the rest of the set, which ended with the Eagles scoring the final two points for a 25-23 decision.
The Griffins would even the match at 1-1 after a late surge in the second set. Trailing 21-20, Seton Hill rolled off five straight points, sparked by kills from
Kierstin Schade and
Skylar Burkett and a block by Schade and
Elizabeth Ward, to take a 25-21 win. The third set didn't feature any large runs, as there were 12 ties in the set, including at 18-18. Then Clarion finally pulled away by scoring seven of the final 10 points for a 25-21 win and a 2-1 advantage.
Needing the fourth set to extend the match, the Griffins used a pair of aces and a kill by Cameron Beril to run out to 7-1 lead to open the set. Clarion would rally later in the set with six straight points and eventually take a 20-19 lead. That was answered by four in a row by the Griffins, with kills coming from Ward,
Riley Rock and
Mara Yahner. The Eagles scored a pair to trim their deficit to 23-22, but another Yahner kill was one of the final two points for the Griffins, who forced the fifth set with a 25-22 decision.
The fifth set played out just as the entire match had, with the teams combining for 13 ties through the set. The Griffins leaned on Yahner early in the set, as she had three straight kills to turn an 8-6 deficit into a 9-8 lead. The later stages of the set saw Beril and
Paige Cole step up with big hits. Clarion had three match points but a kill by Cole and two by Beril kept the Griffins alive. Another Beril kill had SHU on top 17-16 serving for the match, Clarion managed to stave off that point, but then a service error and another kills from Cole ended the deciding set at 19-17 in Seton Hill's favor for the 3-2 triumph.
There were strong performances from numerous Griffins in this win, led by Beril with a team-high 20 kills and 11 digs. Yahner had a big night at the net as well with 14 kills, while setting up the hitters was
Shannon Watkins with 27Â assists and Abby Osterling with 15. The back row efforts were led by
Carrie Leazer with 23 digs and she also served three aces, while Schade recorded eight total blocks during the match.Â
