On a night where they honored their four seniors, the Seton Hill women's volleyball team made it a night to remember as they defeated Pitt Johnstown in five sets in PSAC West action in the McKenna Center. SHU is now 11-13 overall and 4-9 in the west while UPJ falls to 12-10 overall and 5-8 in the west.
The Griffins used two kills from
Cameron Baril and an ace from
Terese Mihalcin to take their first lead of the set at 7-6. Kills from Baril and
Kierstin Schade extended the lead to 10-8. With the Griffins trailing 19-17, Mihalcin got a kill and
Abby Oesterling followed with an ace to put the Griffins in front 20-19. Schade gave SHU a 23-21 lead and after a UPJ point, Baril and
Teresa Weickert ended the set with kills as SHU took the set by a 25-22 score.
UPJ led the entire time in the second set as they evened the match at one with a 25-18 second set win.
It was all Seton Hill in the early portion of the third set as they took a 12-3 lead. They scored seven of the first eight points with
Paige Cole having an ace and Baril having a kill during the run.
Riley Rock and
Mara Yahner teammed up for two blocks and Yahner and
Bobbi Rempe added another block as SHU took the early 12-3 lead. Another kill from Baril gave SHU a 21-10 lead. UPJ responded with a 7-0 run in the set to trim the lead to 22-19. Yahner and
Elizabeth Ward got a block and Yahner ended the set with a kill as SHU took a 2-1 lead with a 25-22 set win.
Pitt Johnstown used an 8-1 run in the early part of the fourth set as they built a 12-6 lead. A 4-0 Griffin run on a block from Schade and Baril and a Schade kill cut the lead to 21-17 but the Mountain Cats scored the final four points of the set to send the match to a fifth set.
In the fifth set, UPJ jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Kills from Schade and Ward evened the set back up at six. With the score tied at nine, Ward got a kill, Rock and
Katie Koziarz followed with a block and Oesterling added an ace as SHU built their lead to 13-9 forcing a UPJ timeout. Two sttraight from UPJ was answered with a Cole kill and Baril sent the fans home happy with a kill on match point.
Baril led SHU with 15 kills. Schade added nine. Rock led the Griffins with five blocks. Oesterling paced the offense with 20 assists and
Carrie Leazer had a match high 31 digs.
SHU will close out the home portion of their schedule as they host Clarion on Saturday evening at 6 PM.
