The Griffin wrestling team continued their weekend in North Carolina when they took part in the NC State Wolfpack Open at the Cary Academy on Sunday morning and afternoon.
Twenty Griffin wrestlers took part in the event. The open was highlighted by two top six finishes from Griffins.
Brandon Matthews placed fifth in the 184 pound weight class while
Tyler Alberts placed sixth at 157 pounds.
Matthews opened the open with a win by fall over Armando Acosta of Newberry. After dropping the quarterfinal match, Matthews then won three straight matches for the fifth place finish. He won two of the matches by decision before winning the fifth place match by medical forfeit.
Alberts dropped his first match of the day before winning four straight matches to get into the fifth place match. Tyler defeated David Varner of King and Aidan Lenz of The Citadel by fall in his first two consolation matches. He then won his next two matches by decision before falling to Ty Finn in the fifth place match.
Riley O'Mara earned three straight wins by fall in the consolation round.
Colby Romjue picked up two wins by fall in the consolation round before being eliminated.
Logan McKoy earned a win by tech fall.
Bryce Wilkes and
Dominic Williams each earned a win by major decision.
Frank Bonura and
Luke Ewing had one win by decision.
Joel Cawoski earned a win by medical forfeit.
John Meyers earned a win by DQ.
The team returns to dual matches when they open PSAC play on the road at Kutztown on Wednesday, December 1st.
