Women's Hoops Runs Winning Streak to Three

Seton Hill closed out play in the PSAC/CIAA Challenge at IUP on Sunday afternoon with a matchup with Virginia State.  SHU outscored the Trojans 16-6 in the first quarter and never trailed in the contest as they won their third straight with a 63-46 win.  SHU is now 3-2 on the season.

SHU scored the first eleven points of the contest as Sonia Sarda opened the scoring and Katie Nolan followed with three straight baskets to put the Griffins in front 8-0 less than four minutes into the contest.  Cheyenne Trest added a free throw and Nolan added two more free throws as SHU built an 11-0 lead midway through the quarter.  The Griffins carried a 16-6 lead into the second quarter.

A three pointer from Teresa Haigh, followed by baskets from Joi Burleigh and Nolan allowed the Griffins to double up Virginia State with a 28-14 lead late in the second quarter.  SHU led 30-19 at the half.

Virginia State got to within six points in the third quarter but three pointers from Christiane Frye, Courtney Tomas and Madelyn Fischer near the end of the quarter put the Griffins in front 48-33 heading to the fourth quarter.

Tomas opened the fourth quarter by hitting a three pointer.  The Griffins were able to put the game away by going eight for eight from the free throw line in the final two minutes of the contest.

Nolan led the Griffins with 16 points.  Frye also reached double figures with 13 points.  Tomas just missed double figures with nine points.
