Volleyball Drops Five Set Match at Clarion

Seton Hill hit the road for a pair of PSAC Western Division matches over the weekend.  The first match was a road contest at Clarion on Friday evening.  The Griffins won the first and fourth sets but fell in five to the Golden Eagles.  SHU drops to 9-7 overall and 2-3 in the west while Clarion improves to 11-6 overall and 3-2 in the west.

After giving up the first two points of the first set, the Griffins ran off five straight to take an early lead.  Katie Koziarz and Riley Rock each had a kill during the run.  Clarion tied the set at six before SHU went on a 5-0 run.  Mara Yahner added two kills in the run.  SHU added another 4-0 run and a final 5-0 run to take the first set by a 25-16 score.

The second set was played tightly through the early portions of the set.  Clarion was able to finally pull away with a late 4-0 run and tied the match at one with a 25-20 second set win.

Clarion built a 15-8 lead midway through the third set.  The Griffins responded with a 6-2 run to trim the lead to 17-14 but the Eagles ran off eight straight points to take a 2-1 lead with a 25-14 third set win.

After a service error, Clarion scored the next six points to take a 6-1 lead in the fourth set.  Seton Hill battled back to tie the set at 16 with a 6-1 run.  Yahner had two kills and Elizabeth Ward added a kill in the run.  A quick 5-1 run put Clarion in front 22-18.  SHU answered right back with a 4-0 run on a kill from Bobbi Rempe, a block from Koziarz and Paige Cole and a Cole kill.  After two Clarion points, a kill from Ward and block from Ward and Koziarz tied the set back up at 24.  A Yahner kill answered a Griffin hitting error to tie the set at 25.  A Clarion error gave the Griffins set point and Koziarz closed out the set with an ace.

The Golden Eagles opened the fifth set with a 4-0 run.  SHU fought back and after kills from Rempe and Yahner trailed just 6-5.  A Cole kill cut the Clarion lead to 9-7 but the Eagles then ran off five in a row before ending the match with a 15-8 win.

Yahner led the Griffins with 15 kills. Cole finished with 9 kills and 3 blocks. Rempe added 7 kills and 5 blocks. Koziarz finished with a match high 7 blocks. Riley Rock had 17 assists while Abby Oesterling added 16. Carrie Leazer had a match high 24 digs.

SHU will take on Pitt Johnstown on Saturday afternoon.
