After using a big run early in set one to take the lead over Point Park, Seton Hill surged late in the final two sets to record a 3-0 triumph over the Pioneers in a non-conference match Tuesday night.
The opening set was tied at 3-3 when the Griffins ripped off 11 points in a row.
Katie Koziarz served a pair of aces, while
Mara Yahner had three kills during the run. Point Park managed to chip away at their deficit and were within 22-20 when Seton Hill scored the final three points to claim the 25-20 decision and a 1-0 lead.
In the second set, the Griffins looked like they took control with a 6-2 surge, fueled by a shared block by
Paige Cole and
Mackenzie English and a solo block by
Bobbi Rempe, to forge a 20-15 advantage. Point Park responded with six of the next seven points to draw even at 21-21. Following a Seton Hill timeout, the Griffins recovered to claim the next four points. Kills by
Elizabeth Ward were sandwiched around a Pioneer error and the final point came on a kill by Koziarz to finish the 25-21 win and a 2-0 SHU lead.
Three consecutive aces by
Carrie Leazer sparked a 5-0 run by Seton Hill to open the third set and the Griffins lead would swell to as large as eight, including a 17-9 margin. The Pioneers wouldn't go away quietly, as they rolled off 11 of the next 14 points to tie the score at 20-20. The last run of the evening would belong to the Griffins again, as the final five points came from the same duo to clinch the Seton Hill win. English and
Terese Mihalcin combined for a block to break the tie and then Mihalcin put away a kill. English/Mohalcin combined for another block for the next point and then it was English's turn for a kill. Point Park staved off one match point, but then Mihalcin finished the 25-21 third-set win with another kill to complete the sweep.
Highlighting the victory was the Griffins' strong serving, as they complied 15 aces in the match, including five by Leazer and four by Abby Osterling, who also passed out a team-best 15 assists. The top hitters up front were Yahner with nine kills and
Paige Cole with eight. In addition to three kills, English recorded four assisted blocks at the net and the defensive efforts also featured Cole, Leazer and Osterling with nine digs each.
With the win to improve to 9-6 this year, the Griffins turn their focus to the weekend for a pair of PSAC West road matches. Seton Hill will travel to Clarion Friday night for a 7 pm match and then journey to Johnstown to take on UPJ at 1 pm Saturday afternoon.
