The Griffin football team made the short trip to California, PA for a PSAC West matchup with the #4 Vulcans on Saturday afternoon at Adamson Stadium. California scored 28 points in the first quarter and the Griffins were never able to recover in a 42-14 road loss at CalU. SHU falls to 4-5 overall and 2-4 in the west while CalU improves to 8-0 overall and 5-0 in the west.
After the Griffins went three and out on their first possession the Vulcans marched 70 yards in 11 plays for the first score of the game as they took a 7-0 lead with 9:17 to play in the first quarter. That score would be the beginning of a rough four minute span for the Griffins. SHU fumbled the kickoff return and Cal scored just two plays later on a seven yard TD pass as they extended their lead to 14-0. On a third and seven on their next possession, the Griffins were intercepted and the ball was returned 27 yards for a CalU touchdown that gave them a 21-0 lead with 7:26 to play in the quarter. Seton Hill then fumbled on their next possession which led to a 15 yard CalU touchdown pass which extended the lead to 28-0 with 5:11 to play in the quarter.
With a little over ten minutes to play in the second quarter, the Griffins took advantage of a snap over the CalU punters head which gave the Griffins the ball at the CalU two yard line. SHU was able to overcome an unsportsmanlike penalty when
Jake McCormick found
Todd Phillips in the end with a 16 yard TD pass with 9:23 to play in the half. SHU cut the Vulcans lead to 28-7.
Jaylen McDuffie then scooped up a fumble on the next Cal drive and returned it to the Griffins 46 yard line. That drive stalled and the Griffins were forced to turn the ball over on downs at the Cal 30 yard line. The Vulcans closed out the scoring in the first half with a 22 yard TD pass just before the break that extended their lead to 35-7.
CalU marched 78 yards on 10 plays on their first possession of the second half as they extended their lead to 42-7 early in the third quarter. The Griffins then had an 18 play drive that covered 68 yards but ended with a blocked field goal attempt on the next to final play of the third quarter.
Midway through the fourth quarter,
Damonte Pratt intercepted the Vulcans at the Griffins seven yard line. The Griffins then marched on a 20 play drive that took up nearly all of the quarter.
JaiQuawn McGriff capped the drive with a three yard touchdown run with 17 seconds to play in the game.
Logan Wiland finished with 166 yards on 33 carries. Phillips had two catches for 40 yards and a touchdown.
Kurt Adkins finished with three catches.
Jayden Emberton-Gaines led the defense with eight tackles. McDuffie finished with six tackles and the fumble recovery.
SHU will host IUP next Saturday at noon. It will be Senior Day for the Griffins.
