Volleyball Sweeps Slippery Rock

Seton Hill continued their two match homestand with a PSAC Western Division matchup with Slippery Rock on Tuesday evening in the McKenna Center.  The Griffins swept the Rock by the score of 3-0 to improve to 10-12 overall and 3-8 in the PSAC West.

A kill from Elizabeth Ward and back to back aces from Riley Rock gave SHU an early 4-2 lead in the first set.  SHU used a block from Bobbi Rempe, a kill from Paige Cole and a Carrie Leazer ace to build a 9-4 lead with a 4-0 run.  Leading 19-15, the Griffins closed out the set with a 6-0 run to take a 1-0 lead in the match.  Cole had two kills, Rock and Mara Yahner each added one while Yahner and Katie Koziarz combined on a block during the set winning run.

Slippery Rock took a 5-4 lead in the second set but the Griffins responded with a 6-0 run to take a 10-5 lead forcing a Slippery Rock timeout.  Mariela Alvarado had two aces and Ward and Rempe combined for two blocks in the run.  After the Rock trimmed the lead to 12-10, SHU ran off five straight points with a kill from Cole and a Cole/Koziarz block.  The Griffins used one more 5-0 run to put the set away and take a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-16 second set win.

Both teams had 3-0 runs in the early portion of the third set as SHU led 8-7.  Slippery Rock then went on a 7-2 run to build a 14-10 lead.  SHU called a timeout and came out of the timeout and went on a 6-1 run to take a 16-15 lead.  Rempe and Yahner had kills during the run.  Two kills from Yahner extended the SHU lead to 21-17.  Slippery Rock battled back to tie the set at 23 but a kill from Rempe and a Slippery Rock attack error ended the set and the match for the Griffins.

Yahner led the Griffins with 10 kills.  Cole added eight kills and 15 digs.  Ward was nearly perfect from the court as she hit .778 in the match with seven kills on nine swings.  Abby Oesterling paced the offense with 14 assists while Rock added 11.  Koziarz finished with four blocks while Rempe added three.  Leazer had a match high 28 digs.

The Griffins will head to CalU for another PSAC West matchup on Friday evening.
