A Tale of Two Halves

Seton Hill returned home to host Mercyhurst on Wednesday evening in the McKenna Center.

It was a tale of two halves as SHU built a 39-25 halftime lead but Mercyhurst outscored the Griffins 45-25 in the second half for a 70-64 win over the Griffins.  SHU falls to 12-9 overall and 7-9 in PSAC play while the Lakers improve to 6-16 overall and 6-10 in PSAC play.

Seton Hill started off fast, taking a 6-0 lead in the first three minutes of the contest on a Sydney Rabold three pointer and three points from Katie Nolan.  After the Lakers scored five straight, SHU responded with ten straight to take a 16-5 lead with 1:57 to play in the quarter.  Lexi Civittolo scored five points and Tiana Stewart added a three pointer in the 10-0 run.  The Lakers scored the final four points of the quarter and trailed 16-9 after one quarter.

A three pointer and layin from Nolan put SHU in front 23-13 less than three minutes into the second.  Mercyhurst trimmed the lead to 28-23 with 3:18 to play in the half but SHU closed the half on an 11-2 run to take a 39-25 halftime lead.  Stewart and Madelyn Fischer each hit threes in the final three minutes.

Nolan scored the first six points out of the half for the Griffins and they led 45-34 with 6:54 left in the quarter.  SHU would only hit four free throws and one more basket over the last seven minutes of the quarter and the Lakers cut the SHU lead to 51-49 at the end of the third quarter.

Nolan opened the fourth quarter hitting two free throws to push the lead back to four at 53-49.  The Lakers went on a quick 8-0 run to take a 57-53 lead with 7:30 left in the quarter.  A basket from Nolan at the 7:18 mark and another from Civittolo at the 2:47 mark tied the contest at 57.  The Lakers responded with a three and hit two more free throws to extend the lead to 62-57 with 1:20 to play.  A three point play from Cheyenne Trest cut the lead to 66-64 with 18 seconds left but the Lakers went four of four from the line to close out the win.

Nolan led the Griffins with 24 points.  Civittolo also reached double figures with 15 points.  Stewart and Fischer each added 6.

SHU will host Gannon on Saturday afternoon at 1 PM.
