The Griffin women's basketball team made the short trip to California, PA to take on the Vulcans in a PSAC West matchup on Wednesday evening.
SHU outscored the Vulcans by five points in the second half but it was not enough to erase a twenty point halftime deficit as the Vulcans defeated the Griffins by a 71-56 score. SHU drops to 13-12 overall and 7-12 in PSAC action while CalU improves to 18-7 overall and 12-7 in the PSAC.
CalU jumped out to a 5-0 lead over the Griffins before
Rena Enterline got SHU on the board with a three pointer with 7:50 to play in the first quarter. Cal then went on an 11-2 run over a four minute stretch to build its lead to 16-5 with 3:13 to play. Baskets from
Lexi Civittolo and
Cheyenne Trest cut the lead to 19-10 at the end of the first quarter.
Over the first five minutes of the second half, the Vulcans outscored the Griffins 16-5 to build their lead to 36-15. The Griffins cut the lead to 16 on a three pointer by
Tiana Stewart with 4:31 to play but CalU took a 47-27 lead into the halftime break.
After a CalU basket, the Griffins used a three pointer from Enterline and baskets from
Katie Nolan and Civittolo to cut the lead to 49-34 with 6:59 to play in the third quarter. CalU answered with a 12-3 run to push the lead back to 61-37 with just over three minutes to play. Two free throws from Stewart and a jumper from
Sydney Rabold trimmed the lead to 61-42 after the third quarter.
Back to back baskets from Stewart cut the Vulcan lead to 63-49 with 6:29 to play. The team closed the scoring with two baskets from
Samantha Kosmacki.
Stewart posted a double double of 12 points and 11 rebounds. Civittolo also reached double figures with 10 points. Enterline added 9 points and Nolan finished with 8 points and 11 rebounds.
SHU will host Indiana (PA) on Saturday afternoon at 1 PM where two seniors will be honored before the contest.
