Griffins Win Second Half but Not Enough vs CalU

The Griffin women's basketball team made the short trip to California, PA to take on the Vulcans in a PSAC West matchup on Wednesday evening.

SHU outscored the Vulcans by five points in the second half but it was not enough to erase a twenty point halftime deficit as the Vulcans defeated the Griffins by a 71-56 score.  SHU drops to 13-12 overall and 7-12 in PSAC action while CalU improves to 18-7 overall and 12-7 in the PSAC.

CalU jumped out to a 5-0 lead over the Griffins before Rena Enterline got SHU on the board with a three pointer with 7:50 to play in the first quarter.  Cal then went on an 11-2 run over a four minute stretch to build its lead to 16-5 with 3:13 to play.  Baskets from Lexi Civittolo and Cheyenne Trest cut the lead to 19-10 at the end of the first quarter.

Over the first five minutes of the second half, the Vulcans outscored the Griffins 16-5 to build their lead to 36-15.  The Griffins cut the lead to 16 on a three pointer by Tiana Stewart with 4:31 to play but CalU took a 47-27 lead into the halftime break.

After a CalU basket, the Griffins used a three pointer from Enterline and baskets from Katie Nolan and Civittolo to cut the lead to 49-34 with 6:59 to play in the third quarter.  CalU answered with a 12-3 run to push the lead back to 61-37 with just over three minutes to play.  Two free throws from Stewart and a jumper from Sydney Rabold trimmed the lead to 61-42 after the third quarter.

Back to back baskets from Stewart cut the Vulcan lead to 63-49 with 6:29 to play.  The team closed the scoring with two baskets from Samantha Kosmacki

Stewart posted a double double of 12 points and 11 rebounds.  Civittolo also reached double figures with 10 points.  Enterline added 9 points and Nolan finished with 8 points and 11 rebounds.
