The Griffin softball teams opened their 2020 season at the Snow Bird Freeze Out Tournament in Myrtle Beach, SC on Friday afternoon. They opened with a matchup with #17 St Anselm and closed out the day with a matchup with Goldey-Beacom.
St Anselm scored three runs in two different innings as they defeated the Griffins by a 6-0 score. SHU rebounded to knock off Goldey-Beacom 9-1 in five innings in the second game of the day.
The Hawks took a 3-0 lead over the Griffins in the bottom of the second inning. They added three more runs in the fifth inning to increase their lead to 6-0.
Alexis Vargas and
Jenna Osikowicz had hits for the Griffins in game one.
Goldey-Beacom took advantage of a leadoff walk to take a 1-0 lead over the Griffins in the first inning of game two.
SHU responded with three runs in their half of the inning bu playing long ball. Vargas reached on an error and scored when
Christiana Skrabak homered.
Chelsea Rohan followed with a homer to put SHU in front 3-0.
The Griffins added three more runs in the second inning.
Ki Givens led off the inning with a walk. After two outs, Vargas singled to drive in Givens. Osikowicz followed with a base hit and both scored when Skrabak tripled.
Seton Hill pushed across their final three runs in the fourth. Vargas opened the inning with a double and scored when Skrabak singled. With the bases loaded,
Morgan Toal singled in two to extend the SHU lead to 9-1 and set up the eight run rule.
Skrabak led the Griffins going 3-3 with 5 RBI. Vargas, Rohan and Toal each added two hits.
Shaelynn Myers went the distance, giving up 4 hits while striking out 6.
SHU continues play in Myrtle Beach on Saturday when they take on LeMoyne at 10 AM and Lock Haven at 2 PM.
