Huge Third Quarter Carries Griffins to PSAC West Win

Seton Hill hosted Clarion on Monday evening in the PSAC West home opener for the Griffins.

The Griffins used a huge third quarter advantage, 32-8, in route to a 75-50 home victory over the Golden Eagles.  The win is the fifth straight for the Griffins as they improve to 11-1 overall and 6-1 in the PSAC.

The first quarter was a bunch of runs as Clarion took an early 6-0 lead over the Griffins before they responded with an 8-0 run of their own.  A steal and a layin from Sydney Rabold opened up the run.  Cheyenne Trest and Samantha Kosmacki each hit threes to end the run.  Clarion then went on an 8-0 run over a four minute stretch to take a 14-8 lead with two minutes to play.  Layups from Madelyn Fischer and Lexi Civittolo cut the lead to 16-12 at the end of the first quarter.

The Griffins opened the second quarter with a 6-0 run to retake the lead at 18-16.  After a Clarion three pointer, Katie Nolan finsihed off a three point play to put SHU back in front 21-19.  Another Nolan three point play gave SHU a 24-20 lead with 4:29 to play before the half.  Clarion battled back to tie the score at 26 before Nolan gave SHU a 28-26 halftime lead with a late basket.

Clarion kept the score close over the first two minutes of the third quarter but with the Griffins leading 34-30, SHU went on a 24-3 run over a seven minute stretch to build a 58-33 lead.  Civittolo scored nine points during the run and Tiana Stewart hit back to back threes late in the run to carry the Griffins.  SHU used a 32-8 third quarter to take a 60-34 lead into the fourth quarter.

Back to back layins from Rena Enterline to open the fourth quarter gave the Griffins their largest lead of the game at 64-34 early in the fourth quarter.  Clarion would get no closer than 23 points down the stretch as SHU ran their winning streak to five.

Seton Hill held a 60-45 advantage on the boards in the contest.

Nolan paced the Griffins with a game high 16 points. She added 8 rebounds. Civittolo finished with 13 points. Enterline also hit double figures with 10 points. Kosmacki scored 8 points.  Trest and Courtney Tomas each had 9 rebounds. Stewart finished with 8.

SHU will continue PSAC West play on Wednesday evening when they travel to Gannon.  Tip is set for 5:30 PM.
