Seton Hill began PSAC West play with a road matchup at Mercyhurst on Friday evening.
The Griffins pulled away in the fourth quarter for an 85-62 victory over the Lakers. SHU improves to 10-1 overall and 5-1 in PSAC play.
The Lakers scored the first four points of the game to take an early 4-0 lead. The Lakers were able to take an 8-4 lead just under three minutes into the contest. A three point play from
Courtney Cecere gave SHU their first lead of the game at 9-8 with 6:16 to play. Two free throws from
Cheyenne Trest extended the SHU lead to 15-12 with just over three minutes to play in the quarter. Mercyhurst answered with a 9-2 run to build a 21-17 lead late in the quarter.
Tiana Stewart scored the final four points of the quarter as SHU and Mercyhurst were tied at 21 after one quarter of action.
Sydney Rabold opened the second quarter scoring by draining a three pointer to put the Griffins in front 24-21. Trest finished off a three point play to extend the SHU lead to 33-28 midway thru the second quarter. The Lakers responded with an 8-2 run to take a 36-35 lead with just under three minutes remaining before the half. Trest hit a three then a layup at the buzzer to give SHU a 41-39 lead at the halftime break.
The Lakers battled back to tie the score at 46 with just over seven minutes to play in the third quarter. Three straight layups from
Katie Nolan,
Lexi Civittolo and
Madelyn Fischer pushed the SHU lead to 52-46. Leading 54-50, the Griffins went on a 7-0 run to take their first double digit lead of the game. SHU took a 63-54 lead into the fourth quarter.
The Griffins opened the fourth quarter scoring the first six points to extend their lead to 69-54 with 7:30 to play. Seton Hill continued to extend their lead throughout the fourth quarter as they picked up a twenty three point win.
Nolan led the Griffins with a double double of 22 points and 10 rebounds. Trest and Civittolo each added 13 points and Stewart tossed in 11. Trest also added seven rebounds and seven assists.
Samantha Kosmacki finished with eight points.
SHU returns home to host Clarion on Monday evening in another PSAC West contest.
