Seton Hill continued their three game homestand with an important PSAC West and Atlantic Regional contest against California (PA) in the McKenna Center on Wednesday evening.
Katie Nolan posted career highs with 23 points and 18 rebounds but it was not enough as the Vulcans defeated the Griffins by a 67-58 score. SHU falls to 12-3 overall and 7-3 in PSAC play while the Vulcans improve to 13-3 overall and 7-3 in PSAC play.
CalU took a quick 4-0 lead just a minute into the contest. The Griffins responded with a 12-0 run over the next four minutes to build a 12-4 lead. Nolan hit five free throws and
Lexi Civittolo ended the run with a three pointer. After a CalU basket,
Cheyenne Trest drained a three pointer to give SHU their largest lead of the game at 15-6 with 3:49 to play in the quarter. Cal was able to cut the lead to 19-16 at the end of the first quarter.
Nolan scored the first four points of the quarter for the Griffins to push their lead to 23-19 early in the quarter. After CalU took a 26-25 lead,
Sydney Rabold hit a three pointer to put the Griffins back in front 28-26 with 5:51 to play before the half. Two Trest free throws gave the Griffins their final lead of the game at 32-30 with 3:45 to play. CalU closed the half on an 11-1 run to take a 41-33 lead into the halftime break.
Back to back layins from Nolan and Civittolo cut the Vulcan lead to six early in the second half. Trailing 47-37, Nolan produced three straight baskets to cut the lead to 47-43 with 4:33 to play in the third. CalU scored the next six points and took a 53-45 lead into the fourth quarter.
Nolan opened the fourth quarter scoring, cutting the lead to 53-47. The Vulcans were able to push their lead to as many as twelve points before the Griffins made one last run. A three pointer from
Tiana Stewart and baskets from Civittolo and Nolan cut the lead to 63-56 with 51 seonds to play but CalU hit all four of their free throws down the stretch to close out the contest.
The difference in the game was the Vulcans forcing 19 Griffin turnovers which led to 25 CalU points. SHU out shot the Vulcans from the floor 43% to 33% but the turnover difference was too much to overcome.
Nolan led the Griffins with 23 points and 18 rebounds, both career and game highs. Civittolo also reached double figures with 16 points. Trest just missed double figures with nine.
SHU closes out their homestand on Saturday when they host Shippensburg in a PSAC Crossover on Saturday afternoon at 1 PM.
