SHU Opens Season in Style with 3-1 Win over Wheeling

The Griffin men's soccer team opened their 2019 campaign with a home matchup with Wheeling University on Thursday afternoon.  Daniel Van Gorp scored twice and Archie Lock added the third goal as the Griffins defeated the Cardinals by a 3-1 score.

The first half was scoreless for the first thirty minutes of the first half.  Wheeling broke the ice in the 31st minute with a goal to take a 1-0 lead over the Griffins.  Less than ten minutes later, Daniel Van Gorp tied the game at one when he took a pass from Lloyd Davies and got behind the backline and placed a shot in the left hand side of the net.  The game remained tied at one heading to the halftime break.  SHU held an 8-5 advantage in shots in the first half.

The second half remained scoreless until late in the half when Van Gorp scored his second of the game.  Van Gorp got a piece of a pass from Patrick McAteer and was able to put it past the goalie for a 2-1 SHU lead in the 85th minute.  Lock then closed out the scoring with a blast from the top of the box in the 87th minute to give SHU the 3-1 win.
