The Griffin men's soccer team opened their 2019 campaign with a home matchup with Wheeling University on Thursday afternoon.
Daniel Van Gorp scored twice and
Archie Lock added the third goal as the Griffins defeated the Cardinals by a 3-1 score.
The first half was scoreless for the first thirty minutes of the first half. Wheeling broke the ice in the 31st minute with a goal to take a 1-0 lead over the Griffins. Less than ten minutes later,
Daniel Van Gorp tied the game at one when he took a pass from
Lloyd Davies and got behind the backline and placed a shot in the left hand side of the net. The game remained tied at one heading to the halftime break. SHU held an 8-5 advantage in shots in the first half.
The second half remained scoreless until late in the half when Van Gorp scored his second of the game. Van Gorp got a piece of a pass from
Patrick McAteer and was able to put it past the goalie for a 2-1 SHU lead in the 85th minute. Lock then closed out the scoring with a blast from the top of the box in the 87th minute to give SHU the 3-1 win.
SHU held a 17-9 advantage in shots in the contest.
