Seton Hill began PSAC West play on Saturday afternoon when they hosted #10 Slippery Rock at Offutt Field.
The Rock jumped out to a 27-0 halftime lead and outscored the Griffins by fourteen in the second half in route to a 55-14 PSAC West opening win. The Rock improves to 4-0 on the season.Â
The Griffins won the toss and took the ball to start the game. Seton Hill went three and out. The Rock went 60 yards in two plays, the final thirty on a touchdown pass to take a 7-0 lead with 12:15 to play in the half. The Griffins responded with a sixteen play drive that took 12:55 off the clock but ended with a blocked field goal. The Rock ended the first quarter with a 7-0 lead and the ball at the SHU twelve yard line.Â
On the second play of the second quarter, the Rock hit a 26 yard field goal to take a 10-0 lead. After a Griffin punt, the Rock needed just three plays to increase their lead to 17-0 with 11:23 to play before the half. The Griffins then had another long drive, this one was fourteen plays in 6:26, but again the Griffins missed a field goal attempt. This one hit the right upright from 43 yards out. The Rock was able to increase their lead to 24-0 at the 2:06 mark of the quarter. A Griffin fumble set up a Rock field goal to close out the first half scoring.Â
After forcing a three and out from the Rock to open the second half, the Griffins marched 62 yards in nine plays to reach the endzone. The final play was a halfback pass from
JaiQuawn McGriff to
Chris Jones from seven yards out. The Rock answered that touchdown with one of their own to extend the lead to 34-7 with 4:59 left in the quarter. It did not take the Griffins long to respond as
Darnell Carey took the kickoff back 92 yards to the house to trim the lead to 34-14. The Rock took advantage of a fumble on a punt to take a 41-14 lead into the fourth quarter.Â
Seton Hill opened the fourth quarter with a punt. The Rock then marched 63 yards in ten plays to push their lead to 48-14 early in the quarter. The Rock closed out the scoring with a 44 yard touchdown pass midway thru the quarter.Â
Jones was 18-32 for 179 yards. McGriff added 69 yards on the ground.Â
Kinan Humphrey finished with 8 catches for 90 yards.Â
Fardan Allen and
Jayden Emberton-Gaines each finished with 7 tackles.Â
SHU will head to Clarion next Saturday for a PSAC West contest
