Third Quarter Costly in PSAC West Loss at Clarion

The Griffins hit the road to Clarion for their first PSAC West road contest of the season on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Eagles used a 21-0 third quarter advantage to take control of the game in a 42-16 victory over the Griffins.  SHU drops to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in PSAC West play while Clarion improves to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in PSAC West play.

Clarion won the toss and deferred to their choice til the second half with Seton Hill taking the ball to start the game.  The Griffins punted on their first two possessions of the quarter.  Late in the quarter, the Griffin defense forced a missed field goal to keep the game scoreless.

The Griffin defense forced a turnover on downs to start the second quarter and they took over at their own 28 yard line.  SHU moved the ball but was forced to punt.  The punt was blocked and Clarion scooped and scored to take a 7-0 lead over the Griffins.  Darnell Carey returned the kick to the Clarion 46 but a penalty moved the ball back to the SHU 42.  It did not take the Griffins long to answer as Ryan Barabe hit John Makell with a 58 yard touchdown pass to cut the lead to 7-6 with 12:13 to play in the half.  Clarion answered right back with a nine play, 75 yard touchdown drive.  Hunter Miller hit a 22 yard field goal right before the half to cut the lead to 14-9.

The Golden Eagles opened the second half, returning the kick 90 yards for a touchdown to increase their lead to 21-6.  After a Griffin punt, Clarion used nearly nine minutes in a 15 play drive that ended with a touchdown increasing the lead to 28-9 with 2:32 to play in the quarter.  After an interception, Clarion marched 53 yards in four plays to push their lead to 35-9 with 11 seconds left in the quarter.

Clarion used over six minutes of the clock in another scoring drive that increased the lead to 42-9 midway thru the fourth quarter.  Michael Valentino closed out the scoring in the contest with a four yard touchdown run late in the quarter.

Barabe finished 19-35 for 287 yards and a touchdown.  Valentino rushed for 45 yards and the touchdown.  Eleven Griffins caught a pass led by Kinan Humphrey with four for 74 yards.  Jaylen McDuffie led the defense with 13 tackles including 2.5 for loss.  Jayden Emberton-Gaines added 10 tackles.

SHU will host Gannon next week in a PSAC West contest on Homecoming.  Kick is set for 4 PM.
