Seton Hill battled Mercyhurst in an elimination game on Thursday afternoon in the PSAC Tournament. The Griffins avoided elimination by scoring in five innings, including a six spot in the third, in a 12-8 win over the Lakers. SHU improved to 30-20 overall while the Lakers drop to 29-13.
The Griffins took a 1-0 lead in the second inning.
Parker Denny led off the inning with a double. After an out,
Tommy Pellis was hit by a pitch.
Ryan Grieco followed with an RBI single thru the middle to give the Griffins a 1-0 lead.
Mercyhurst responded with a run in their half of the third inning to tie the score at one. They used a leadoff triple to tie the game.
SHU put up a four spot in the third inning.
Chris Law was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning.
Nick Stotler reached on a bunt base hit.
Isaiah DiAndreth singled thru the left side to knock in Law. Denny then cleared the bases with a bomb over the left center field wall to put the Griffins in front 5-1.
Craig Lewis added a single as the Griffins chased the Laker starter. Grieco singled to right field to put runners on first and second with two outs.
Austin Braendel then singled off the net above the left field wall to knock in Lewis and give SHU a 6-1 lead. SHU added another run on a failed pick off attempt at second, allowing
Colton Carney to score.
The Lakers scored five runs on just three hits in the top of the fourth inning to trim the SHU lead to 7-6. The Griffins got one of those runs back in the bottom of the inning. Stotler drew a walk, stole second and was balked to third. He scored on a Denny RBI single. The Lakers tied the game at eight with a two run homer to left field in the top of the seventh inning.
Seton Hill scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take a 10-8 lead. Denny drew a leadoff walk. He scored when Lewis doubled off the left center field wall. After a groundout, Grieco made it 10-8 with a RBI double.
The Griffins added two insurance runs in the eighth inning. With one out, DiAndreth and Denny singled. Lewis then drove in two runs with a single up the middle.
Denny led the SHU offense by going 4-4 with four runs scored and four RBI. Lewis and Grieco each added three hits. Lewis drove in three and Grieco added two. Braendel and DiAndreth added two hits.
SHU will meet the loser of the West Chester and Gannon matchup at 9:30 AM on Friday morning.
