Seton Hill hosted IUP in a midweek non conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon under sunny skies. IUP held on for a 5-4 win in game one. SHU responded with a 3-1 win in game two. SHU is now 20-12 on the season.
Both pitchers did a great job over the early portion of the contest, holding each team to just one hit in the first three innings.
SHU stranded runners in the second and fourth innings to keep the game scoreless.
Nichole McClendon led off the second with a double and was stranded on third and
Christiana Skrabak reached on a three base error to lead off the fourth but was left on third.
IUP took a 1-0 lead in the fifth on a two out RBI double. The Crimson Hawks added an unearned run in the sixth to push their lead to 2-0.
SHU trimmed the lead in half in the sixth.
Brooke Bower led off with a double and moved to third on a
Jenna Osikowicz single. Bower was cut down at the plate when a ball got away from the catcher. That proved costly as Skrabak singled to knock in Osikowicz and trim the lead to 2-1.
The Crimson Hawks answered with three runs in the seventh inning to increase their lead to 5-1.
McClendon led off the seventh inning with a single. She moved to third on a
Devyn Terry single.
Alexis Vargas then homered over the center field wall to trim the lead to 5-4.
McClendon led the Griffins with two hits.
IUP took a 1-0 lead over the Griffins in the first inning of game two.
SHU responded with two runs in their half of the inning. Bower led off the game with a walk. She scored on a Oskiowicz triple to tie the score at one. Osikowicz scored when Skrabak reached on an error to give SHU a 2-1 lead.
The middle innings were all about the pitchers as each had a streak of 10 straight batters retired over the middle innings.
SHU ended that streak in the fifth and scored a run on two hits to take a 3-1 lead.
Devyn Terry earned the win in the circle with a complete game. She gave up 6 hits and struck out 8. Osikowicz led the Griffins with 2 hits.
SHU will host California (PA) on Friday in a PSAC West contest.
