GREENSBURG, PA - The Seton Hill University women's lacrosse team dropped a heart-breaking overtime game to Indiana University of Pennsylvania in the regular season home finale, but, with Bloomsburg's loss this afternoon, the Griffins have clinched a spot in the 2019 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference playoffs.
// NOTABLES
• The loss drops Seton Hill to 9-7 overall (8-3 PSAC) and puts their playoff hopes in jeopardy.
• IUP improves to 10-5 overall (8-3 PSAC) and all-but solidifies their spot in the PSAC playoffs.
• IUP's Carly Mansur stopped18 saves in the win.
• SHU's
Hailey Jacobs grabbed 11 saves in the loss.
• SHU returns to the post-season after missing the 2018 playoffs.
// HOW IT HAPPENED
• IUP scored three goals in the first four minutes of the game to take an early 3-0 lead. Seton Hill would battle back with goals from
Mackenzie Kilduff and
Olivia Caragein to pull to within two, but IUP responded with three goals of their own to grab a 6-2 lead with 9:56 remaining in the first. From there, the Griffins would outscore IUP by a 4-1 margin with
Keagan Pontious' goal with just three seconds remaining in the half capped off the run to make the score 7-6 heading into the second frame.
• The Griff's kept the momentum going early in the second half, outscoring IUP 5-1 to take what seemed like a commanding 11-8 lead with 18:47 remaining on the clock. However, the Crimson Hawks took the wind out of the SHU sails when they rattled off five straight to regain the lead, 13-11, with 8:11 to go.
Alyssa Ference's goal at the 3:52 mark got SHU to within one, 13-12, and that's where things got interesting. Ally Burrows scored an insurance goal with 30.9 remaining in the game but the goal was disallowed and called a crease violation, giving Seton Hill one last chance. As SHU raced quickly to the other end, Head Coach
Courtney Grove yelled for a time out to set up a play. The referee's could not hear her, but it was a good thing that they didn't as
Katelyn Cressman found the back of the net to send the game into overtime tied, 13-13.
• As crazy as the ending of the second half was, it was the opposite in overtime. IUP would win the Draw Control, set up a play, and score the game winner with 1:43 left of the clock.
// UP NEXT
• The Griffins finish out the regular season when they travel to Millersville on Saturday. Both teams have clinched a spot in the playoffs, but the game is pivotal for seeding.
