Baseball Splits PSAC West DH with CalU

After a rainout on Friday, the start of the Griffins PSAC West four game set with CalU was pushed back to Saturday in Washington, PA.  The Griffins won the first game of the doubleheader by a 5-2 score while the Vulcans responded with a 4-1 win in game two to earn a split of the doubleheader.  SHU is now 20-16 overall and 11-7 in PSAC West action.

The Griffins jumped on the Vulcans in the first inning of game one with two runs.  Andrew Chuba singled to lead off the game and moved to second on a wild pitch.  Ryan Grieco was walked to put runners on first and second.  Tommy Pellis singled to drive in Chuba and put the Griffins in front 1-0.  After Grieco was picked off second base, Chris Law and Isaiah DiAndreth both singled to give SHU a 2-0 advantage.

Cal got one of those runs back in the bottom of the inning with a double steal.  Back to back doubles from Austin Braendel and Chuba extended the Griffins lead to 3-1 in the second inning.

SHU added two more runs in the fifth inning.  Pellis walked to lead off the inning and scored when Law doubled.  Brandon Kline then singled to score Law.

Cal scored once in the sixth inning to end the scoring.

Jared Kollar earned his third win of the season with a complete game four hitter.  He struck out five in the win.  Law led the offense going 3-4.  Chuba and DiAndreth each added two hits.

Chuba again got the Griffins on the board in the first inning of game two.  He homered on a 2-2 pitch to lead off the game.

The Vulcans tied the score at one in the bottom of the second inning.

Both starters then kept their opponents off the board over the next three innings.  Cal finally broke thru in the sixth inning.  They opened the inning with five straight hits to take a 4-1 lead over the Griffins.

Pellis had two hits for the Griffins

SHU and Cal will close out their four game set with a doubleheader in Greensburg on Monday afternoon.  First pitch set for 1 PM.
