Griffins Sweep PSAC West DH at Mercyhurst

After a rainout on Friday, the Griffins opened their four game set with Mercyhurst on the road in Erie on Saturday.  It was well worth the wait as the Griffins swept a pair of games from the host Lakers.  SHU defeated Mercyhurst 22-1 in game one behind six home runs including three from Nick Stotler.  The 21 run margin was the largest margin of victory for the Griffins in PSAC West action in school history.  The Griffins completed the sweep with a 4-1 win in game two.  SHU is now 18-14 overall and 9-5 in PSAC West action.

The Griffins did not waste any time getting on the scoreboard in game one.  Andrew Chuba led off the game and reached on a three base error.  One hitter later, Tommy Pellis singled to give the Griffins a 1-0 lead.  Nick Stotler homered with two outs in the second inning to extend the Griffins lead to 2-0.  Mercyhurst cut the Griffins lead in half in the bottom of the second inning.

SHU put up a five spot in the fourth to increase their lead to 7-1.  Jordan Fiedor led off the inning with a single and scored when Stotler hit his second homer of the game.  Austin Braendel was hit by a pitch and later scored on an error.  Two RBI sacrifice flies from Pellis and Brandon Kline pushed the lead to 7-1.

Seton Hill took advantage of some Mercyhurst wild pitching to score eight times on just three hits in the fifth inning.  Pellis hit a grand slam to clear the bases early in the inning and Stotler hit a three run shot, his third of the game, to give SHU a 15-1 lead.

Ryan Grieco and Isaiah DiAndreth each hit two run homers and Michael Connell singled in two runs as the Griffins poured it on in the sixth to make it 21-1.  Kline singled in a run in the seventh to make it 22-1.

Jared Kollar earned the win by working five innings.  He gave up one unearned run on four hits while striking out nine.  Stotler went 3-4 with the three homers and 6 RBI.  Pellis also had three hits and drove in six.  DiAndreth, Chris Law and Kline each added two hits.

The Griffins wasted little time in getting on the board in game two.  Chuba and Grieco singled to lead off the game.  Both moved up on a ground out.  Chuba scored when DiAndreth reached on a strikeout, passed ball.

SHU added two more runs in the fifth inning.  Adam Bankovich drew a one out walk.  Later in the inning, Grieco reached on an error allowing Bankovich to score.  Pellis followed with an RBI double to make it 3-0.

Mercyhurst got runners to second and third in the sixth with one out after scoring a run but starter George Coyle got two groundouts to end the inning and keep the score at 3-1.

Chuba singled to lead off the seventh and moved to third on an error.  He scored an insurance run on a passed ball to push the lead to 4-1.

Coyle got a 1-2-3 seventh inning including two strikeouts to end the game.

Coyle earned the win with a complete game victory.  He gave up the one run on four hits while striking out six.  Chuba had two hits.

SHU will conclude the four game set on Sunday afternoon at noon with a doubleheader in Greensburg.
