For the second time this week, the Griffin softball team swept a pair of games during their Florida trip. They opened Thursday with an 11-1, 6 inning win over Northern State. SHU finished the sweep with a 3-2 win over Malone in the second game of the day. SHU is now 8-2 on the season.
The Griffins jumped over Northern State for three runs in the top of the first inning. After one out,
Jenna Osikowicz singled. Both
Devyn Terry and
Chelsea Rohan each drew walks to load the bases. Terry scored on an error when
Christiana Skrabak reached on a fielders choice. After
Abbie Thrower walked to load the bases,
Alexis Vargas singled to drive in two and make it 3-0.
Northern State got a run back in the fourth with a solo homer. SHU added four more runs in the fifth. Skrabak led off with a single. Thrower reached on an error to put runners on second and third. Vargas walked to load the bases.
Morgan Toal followed with a sacrifice fly with Thrower scoring on an error to increase the lead to 5-1.
Ashley Boehm and Osikowicz each added RBI singles in the inning.
SHU put the game away in the sixth.
Ki Givens drew a leadoff walk. Skrabak singled and both scored on a Vargas three run shot. Osikowicz made the lead 11-1 with another RBI single.
Skyla Greco earned her sixth win of the season with a complete game victory. She gave up 8 hits and just 1 run while striking out 1.
Osikowicz led the Griffins with 4 hits. Bower, Skrabak, Vargas and Boehm each had two hits. Vargas drove in five runs.
Malone took a 1-0 lead over the Griffins in the top of the first inning. SHU tied the game at one in the third inning. Vargas led off with a double. She moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from
Nichole McClendon. Vargas scored on a Bower sacrifice fly.
The Pioneers took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth with a two out double. Back to back doubles from Vargas and Bower tied the game at two in the fifth and Osikowicz put the Griffins in front with another RBI single.
Terry earned the win with a complete game. She gave up 2 runs on 6 hits while striking out 4. Vargas was 2-2. Bower drove in two runs.
SHU will conclude their spring trip with a doubleheader on Friday. They will meet Concordia - St Paul and Truman State.
