Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Griffins Survive and Advance in PSAC Playoffs

After knocking off two top twenty teams in their previous two contests, the Griffin women's basketball team entered the PSAC playoffs on a high.  Seton Hill continued that high on Monday evening as they went 14-30 from three point land and outscored Pitt Johnstown 27-14 in the fourth quarter for an 80-64 victory over the Lady Cats.  With the win, the Griffins advance to the PSAC Quarterfinals.  SHU is now 19-10 on the season while UPJ ends their season at 13-16.

Both teams exchanged baskets in the early going as UPJ led 8-7 four minutes in.  A three pointer from Lexi Civittolo and a three point play from Katie Nolan extended the lead to 13-8 midway thru the quarter.  Later in the quarter, Megan Marecic scored eight straight points for the Griffins, the last six on back to back threes to give SHU a 21-11 lead.  The Griffins took a 21-13 lead into the second quarter.

UPJ trimmed the lead to 21-17 early in the second quarter but the Griffins responded with a 10-0 run, eight more from Marecic to build a 31-17 lead midway thru the quarter.  Back to back three pointers from Tiana Stewart gave SHU a 42-26 lead with 1:42 to play in the first half.  The Griffins led 42-30 at the half.  Marecic paced the Griffins with 19 points on 7-9 shooting in the first half.

The Griffins got off to a slow start in the third quarter, only scoring eight points in the first nine minutes of the quarter.  UPJ cut the Griffins lead to 50-48 with 1:10 to play but another three from Marecic extended the lead to 53-48.  A late layup from UPJ cut the SHU lead to 53-50 at the end of the third quarter.

Two UPJ free throws cut the SHU lead to one at 53-52 early in the fourth quarter.  Marecic answered with a three point play of her own to push the lead back to four.  A three point play from UPJ cut the lead to 60-57 with 7:54 to play.  Three straight three pointers from the Griffins pushed the lead back to ten at 69-59 with 6:31 to play.  Cheyenne Trest hit two of the three threes.  UPJ would not get any closer down the stretch as SHU outscored the Cats 27-14 in the fourth.

Seton Hill was 8-14 from the floor and 4-7 from three in the fourth quarter.  SHU finished the game shooting 48% from the floor and 47% from three.
