Seton Hill hosted Slippery Rock in another important PSAC West battle on Saturday afternoon in the McKenna Center. The Griffins led for 37:47 in route to a 97-80 victory over the Rock. The win is the third in a row for the Griffins. SHU improves to 15-8 overall and 9-7 in PSAC play while the Rock falls to 9-13 overall and 7-9 in PSAC play. SHU remains a game ahead of UPJ for fourth place in the west.
The Griffins came out of the gates flying, jumping out to a 13-4 lead just four minutes into the contest.
Hannah Laslo scored six points and
Lexi Civittolo added four points during the run. A three from
Megan Marecic extended the lead to 20-10 with four minutes to play in the quarter. Six straight from the Rock cut the lead to four with 2:25 to go. Two threes from
Cheyenne Trest and
Tiana Stewart along with a layin from
Katie Nolan gave SHU a 28-18 first quarter lead.
In the second quarter, the Griffins were able to keep their advantage over the Rock anywhere from nine to fourteen points. Trest and
Courtney Cecere each hit threes in the quarter. The Griffins took a 46-35 lead into the halftime break.
Slippery Rock cut the Griffins to seven early in the third quarter but two Trest free throws and a Cecere layup pushed the lead back to 50-39 with 7:37 to play. Over the next four minutes, the Rock went on a 15-4 run to tie the game at 54 with 3:54 to play.
Katie Nolan hit a layup and Marecic scored seven straight points for the Griffins to push the lead back to 63-60 with 1:28 left. An old fashioned three point play from Trest extended the lead to six as SHU closed the quarter on an 8-0 run to take a 69-60 lead into the fourth.
SHU scored the first four points of the fourth quarter to give them a 73-60 lead. The Rock was able to cut the lead back to single digits twice but the Griffins responded with threes each time to keep the lead in double figures. The Griffins were then able to close out the game at the free throw line.
The Griffins finished shooting 50% from the floor while hitting nine three pointers. They were also 22-28 from the free throw line.
Six Griffins reached double figures in the win for SHU. Marecic led the Griffins with 21 points. Trest followed with 18. Cecere added 14 points. Civittolo finished with 13 points. Nolan added 12 points and 9 rebounds. Laslo finished with 10 points. Cecere finished with 8 rebounds while Civittolo added 7.
The Griffins will head to Edinboro on Wednesday for another PSAC West contest.
