SHU Earns Key PSAC West Victory

Seton Hill traveled up Interstate 79 to Erie to take on Gannon in an important PSAC West battle.  The teams entered tied for fourth place with identical 7-7 records.  The Griffins pulled away in the fourth quarter in route to an important 83-69 victory.  SHU is now 14-8 overall and 8-7 in PSAC play.  Gannon drops to 11-12 overall and 7-8 in PSAC play.

Back to back three pointers from Cheyenne Trest and Megan Marecic gave SHU a 10-5 lead midway thru the first quarter.  A quick 6-0 run gave Gannon an 11-10 lead.  Gannon held a 19-17 lead after the first quarter of play.

The Knights pushed their lead to 24-20 early in the second quarter.  A three point play from Trest and a layin from Courtey Cecere put SHU back in front 28-26 with 7:14 to play in the second.  Four straight points from Katie Nolan extended the SHU lead to 32-28 midway thru the quarter.  Five straight points from Madelyn Fischer extended the lead late in the second half and SHU took a 43-36 lead into the halftime break.

Early in the third quarter, Marecic and Cecere drained three pointers to extend the SHU lead to 49-38.  After Gannon cut the lead seven, Tiana Stewart hit a three to push the lead back to ten.  Gannon scored the final five points of the quarter to trim the SHU lead to 56-53 after three quarters of play.

A basket from Nolan and two Trest free throws gave SHU a 60-53 lead with 7:47 to play.  A quick 8-0 run on threes from Marecic and Trest and two Cecere free throws extended the lead back to double figures at 68-55 midway thru the quarter.  Gannon trimmed the lead to nine with two minutes to play but the Griffins went 10-10 from the free throw line to close out the win.

The big difference in the game was the three point shooting.  SHU was 13-27 while Gannon was just 1-12.  The Griffins were also 18-22 from the free throw line.
