Needing a win to secure a home game in the PSAC playoffs, the Griffins used a little Marecic Magic to produce more McKenna Magic as the Griffins outscored the #17 Vulcans 52-30 in the second half in route to a 73-60 victory. With the win, the Griffins improve to 17-10 overall and 11-9 in PSAC play and secured the fourth seed out of the west. Cal drops to 22-4 overall and 16-4 in PSAC play.
With the win, the Griffins will host a first round PSAC playoff matchup on Monday evening at 5:30 PM.
Both teams came out shooting cold in the first quarter as the Griffins took a 13-12 lead into the second quarter. Neither team led by more than two points.
California used their defense to force Griffin turnovers in the second quarter and were able to build their lead to nine points at the half, 30-21.
The second half was a different story as the Griffins were the ones forcing turnovers that helped them outscore the Vulcans 52-30.
Over the first three minutes of the third quarter, the Griffins were able to erase the Vulcans lead and took a 34-33 lead on a three pointer from
Cheyenne Trest.
Lexi Civittolo and
Megan Marecic each also hit threes during the run. With the Griffins leading 38-37, SHU went on a 10-1 run to build a 48-38 lead with 2:30 to play in the half. Marecic and
Samantha Kosmacki each hit threes during the run. Cal was able to trim the lead to six, 50-44 at the end of the third quarter.
After a Vulcan basket, Marecic drained another three pointer to give SHU a 53-46 lead early in the quarter. Cal trimmed the lead to 55-50 with 7:15 to play but the Griffins then used a 12-0 run to put the game away. Marecic scored the first five points of the run and Trest ended the run with a three pointer to give SHU a 67-50 advantage with 3:24 to play. Cal cut the lead to 11 but Trest and Marecic hit their free throws down the stretch to close out the game.
Marecic posted a double double with a career high 30 points and 14 rebounds. She also added 4 steals and 4 assists. Trest finished the game with 19 points and 8 rebounds. Civittolo nearly reached double figures with 9 points.
The Griffins shot 50% from the floor in the second half and hit 8 of 16 three pointers.
Marecic also sets a new single season record for three pointers in a season with 83.
The Griffins close out the regular season on Saturday when they travel to Indiana (PA) for a 5:30 PM tipoff.
