Seton Hill began their 2019 season with a road doubleheader at Winston Salem State on Sunday. The Rams rallied for an 8-5 win in game one. Seton Hill returned the favor in game two with a wild 17-12 come from behind extra innings victory. SHU is now 1-1 on the season and Winston Salem drops to 10-1 on the season.
The Griffins jumped out to a 2-0 lead on RBI doubles from
Tyler Zaluski and
Colton Carney. Seton Hill increased their lead to 4-1 with a pair of runs in the fifth inning.
Craig Lewis had a sacrifice fly in the inning to knock in a run.
The Rams then scored seven runs in the seventh and eighth innings to take an 8-4 lead. SHU scored one in the ninth but it was not enough as the Rams rallied for an 8-5 win.
Seton Hill took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of game two with an unearned run.
Tommy Pellis reached on an error and later scored on a passed ball. Winston Salem responded with five runs in the bottom of the second to take a 5-1 lead. They added another run in the third to take a 6-1 lead.
SHU got one run back in the fourth. After an out, Zaluski and Pellis singled to put runners on first and third. Zaluski scored on a throwing error to trim the lead to 6-2. WSSU scored three times in the fourth to take a 9-2 lead.
The Griffins scored seven runs in the fifth to tie the game at nine.
Parker Denny homered to start the rally.
Andrew Chuba,
Nick Stotler, Pellis and Carney all drove in runs in the inning. The Rams retook a lead in the bottom half of the inning with a single run.
Seton Hill used a double steal from
Tyler Peterson and Pellis to tie the game at 10 in the top of the seventh.
The game remained tied at ten until the top of the ninth when the Griffins put up a touchdown and added an extra point for a 17-10 lead. Stotler hit a 2 run home run and
Jamie Wrabel singled in two. Carney,
Jordan Fiedor and
Adam Bankovich each knocked in one.
Chuba, Stotler, Pellis and Carney each had two hits in the win.
George Coyle worked the final three innings for the win.
Marshall McGraw pitched two scoreless innings.
Seton Hill and Winston Salem State will close out the three game set on Monday with a single nine inning contest.
