Seton Hill closed out their PSAC West Schedule with a road contest at California (PA) on Saturday evening.
California scored a touchdown in each quarter in route to a 28-14 victory over the Vulcans. SHU falls to 2-7 overall and finishes 2-5 in the west while CalU is 7-3 overall and finishes 5-2 in the west.
Neither team could get much going in the early portions of the first quarter. Both teams went three and out on their first two possessions. Seton Hill drove all the way to the Cal 22 yard line but saw their drive end on a fumble with a backwards lateral that was picked up by CalU to end the SHU drive. The Griffin defense was able to force another punt but the Griffins were picked off on their next possession and Cal took over at the SHU 40 yard line. On their second play, they connected for a 45 yard TD pass to take a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter.
Seton Hill was forced to punt on their first possession of the second quarter. The Vulcans then marched 66 yards in 12 plays, using 6:09 off the clock to take a 14-0 lead with 7:25 to play in the half. The Vulcans took that 14-0 lead into the halftime break.
CalU took the opening kickoff and drove 69 yards in seven plays, the final play a 21 yard TD pass to increase their lead to 21-0 early in the quarter. After a Griffin punt, the defense was able to force a turnover on downs. SHU started their next possession on their own twenty yard line. The quarter ended with Cal leading 21-0 and the Griffins on the CalU 30 yard line.
Early in the fourth quarter on a fourth and ten,
Ryan Barabe hit
Taro Gaither at the one yard line. That play set up a Prince McCarthy one yard touchdown run to trim the lead to 21-7 with 13:06 to play. Cal answered right back with a touchdown drive of their own to push the lead back to 28-7. SHU responded with a 74 yard drive, the final 37 on a Barabe to John Makell touchdown pass to cut the lead back to fourteen at 28-14 with 7:19 to play. The Vulcans would then hold the ball for the final 7:19 and was able to run out the clock.
Barabe finished 21-43 for 244 yards and one touchdown.
Matthew Williams caught six passes for 81 yards.
Narrio Walks led SHU with 13 tackles.
Jayden Emberton-Gaines added 12 and
Jaylen McDuffie also reached double figures with 10.
SHU will conclude their season next Saturday when they travel to Shepherd.
