Seton Hill opened their 2019-20 season on the road at Wheeling University on Wednesday evening.
Wheeling jumped out to a 41-34 halftime lead and defeated the Griffins by a 73-61 score.
The Griffins and Cardinals played a tightly contested first eight minutes of the contest with the Griffins trailing by a 14-12 score. Five straight from the Cardinals pushed their lead to 19-12.
Tommy Sekunda answered with a three point play to cut the lead back to 19-15. The Cardinals were able to push their lead to 27-17 with 8:18 to play in the half. Over the next five minutes the Griffins went on a 15-2 run to take a 32-29 lead.
Jimmy Moon scored six points and Chimaobo Ezekwesili added five points during the run. Wheeling then closed the half on a 13-2 run to take a 42-34 halftime lead.
Seton Hill was able to trim the Cardinal lead to 51-45 five minutes into the second half on a
Drew Green layin and a three pointer from Sekunda. Wheeling was able to push their lead back to double figures and the Griffins were not able to get the lead under ten in the final ten minutes of the contest.
Nathan Davis and Moon led the Griffins with 12 points each. Green also reached double figures with 11 points. Sekunda added 8 points and Ezekwesili finished with 7.
SHU will continue their season opening road trip on Saturday when they travel to Alderson Broaddus.
