Seton Hill began their final week of the regular season with a road matchup at CalU on Tuesday evening.
CalU took the first two sets but the Griffins rallied to win the final three for the reverse sweep of the Vulcans. SHU is now 17-9 overall and 12-5 in PSAC play.
The early portion of the first set was tightly played with neither team holding more than a two point lead. Cal took the first three point lead on a four point run at 17-14. Prior to that point, there were twelve ties in the set. Three straight from the Griffins on kills from
Bobbi Rempe,
Jillian Livorse and
Jessica Hanson tied the set at 18, forcing a Vulcan timeout. A Griffin hitting error and a Vulcan ace put CalU back in front 21-19. A Farian kill trimmed the lead back to 21-20.
Sidney Chapman tied the set at 22 with an ace and
Erin Parks put SHU in front 23-22 with a kill. A service error and a hitting error from the Griffins gave CalU a set point at 24-23. Cal took the first set with a Griffin ball handling error.
The teams exchanged points in the early portion of the second set with seven ties as the score was 7-7. Five straight points for the Vulcans gave them an 11-7 lead and the Griffins took their first timeout of the set. CalU answered three straight for the Griffins with two of their own to take a 14-11 lead. CalU continued to control the set and took a 2-0 lead over the Griffins with a 25-20 second set win.
The Griffins jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead in the third set. CalU battled back to tie the set at nine, forcing a Griffins timeout. Back to back kills from Parks and Farian tied the set at 14. A Vulcan hitting error and a
Katie Koziarz kill put SHU in front 16-14. SHU was able to build their lead to 20-15. SHU won a long point with a block from Koziarz and
Taylor Sabol to take a 23-17 lead. Farian cut the Vulcan lead to 2-1 with a kill that gave SHU a 25-19 third set win.
Seton Hill took an early 9-2 lead in the fourth set. CalU trimmed the lead to 10-6. A kill from Farian extended the lead to 19-10 late in the set. Parks made it 20-11 with a kill. Back to back kills from Parks and Farian extended the lead to 22-11. Koziarz gave SHU a set point at 24-12. Baril ended the set and SHU tied the match at two with a 25-12 fourth set win.
Farian put the Griffins in front in the fifth set with an early kill. Chapman followed with an ace to give SHU a 2-0 lead. Koziarz put one to the floor and CalU burned a timeout down 3-0. Sabol found a spot on the floor without a Vulcan to make it 5-0. Farian followed with a kill and it was 6-0. Another Farian kill pushed the lead to 7-0. After a CalU service error SHU led 8-2 at the turn. A Farian kill out of the back gave SHU an 11-5 advantage. Hanson pushed the lead to 12-5. Another Farian give put the Griffins two points away from the comeback. A CalU hitting error ended the match with SHU winning the set 15-7.
Farian paced the Griffins with 20 kills. Parks also reached double figures with 15. Hanson added 8 and Livorse finished with 7. Sabol ran the offense with 55 assists. Baril led SHU with 18 digs. Sabol added 2 blocks.
SHU will close out the regular season this weekend when they host Indiana (PA) and Pitt Johnstown.
