Hot Start Carries Griffins to PSAC West Win

Seton Hill continued their homestand on Wednesday evening as they hosted Mercyhurst in the McKenna Center for a PSAC West Contest.  SHU came out of gates shooting 12 of 17 from the floor and were able to lead for 38 minutes in an 85-77 victory.  SHU is now 11-5 overall and 5-4 in PSAC play.

Mercyhurst took their only lead of the game when they scored the first basket of the game.  Cheyenne Trest answered with a three pointer to give SHU a 3-2 lead.  With the game tied at seven, SHU got baskets from Lexi Civittolo, Trest and Megan Marecic to take a 13-7 lead with 4:26 to play in the quarter.  After the Lakers hit a three pointer, the Griffins closed the quarter on a 14-4 run to take a 27-14 lead.  Courtney Cecere hit two threes during the run.  SHU was 9-13 from the floor in the quarter. 

The Griffins continued to build their lead in the second quarter and took their largest lead at 24 points (47-23) on two Hannah Laslo free throws with 2:47 to play in the half.  The Lakers ended the half on a 14-5 run to trim the Griffin lead to 52-37 at the half. 

Over the first five minutes of the second half, the Lakers were able to trim the Griffin lead to seven at 56-49.  Two free throws from Cecere and a layin from Katie Nolan pushed the lead back to 11.  After a Laker three, Tiana Stewart answered with a three and a basket to push the lead to 65-52 with two minutes to play in the quarter.  SHU took a 68-59 lead into the fourth quarter. 

The Lakers opened the fourth quarter with a 10-5 run to trim the lead to four at 73-69 midway thru the quarter.  Laslo and Trest then hit baskets to extend the lead to 77-69 with 2:54 to play.  After a Laker basket, Marecic and Trest hit back to back threes to push the lead back to twelve.  Trest hit two free throws to put the game away down the stretch. 

Trest led the Griffins with a season high 24 points.  She also added 8 assists and 5 rebounds.  Marecic finished with 14 points.  Stewart added 13 points off the bench.  Cecere was the fourth Griffin in double figures with 10 points. 

SHU will hit the road as they travel to California (PA) on Saturday for a 1 PM tip.
