Griffins Fall in Home Opener to West Chester

Seton Hill hosted #18 West Chester in the home opener for the Griffins on Saturday afternoon.  The Rams jumped out to a 49-7 halftime lead and defeated the Griffins by a 59-14 score.  The Rams improve to 3-0 while the Griffins drop to 0-3.

West Chester won the toss and deferred to choice to the second half, giving the Griffins the ball to start the game.  The Griffins picked up two first downs but were forced to punt.  The Rams then drove 61 yards in eight plays to take a 7-0 lead midway thru the first quarter.  SHU again punted and this time the Rams went 84 yards in just seven plays to take a 14-0 lead late in the first quarter. 

The Rams scored on three straight possessions to open the second quarter.  The last was a pick six for 36 yards that gave the Rams a 35-0 lead with 7:33 to play in the half.  The Griffins got on the scoreboard late in the second quarter.  Ryan Barabe lateraled the ball to Kinan Humphrey who found John Makell IV down the sidelines for the 35 yard touchdown.  John Watt hit the extra point to cut the lead to 35-7 with 3:40 to play in the half.  WCU took a 42-7 lead with 1:33 to play and after a SHU fumble, the Rams used the short field to take a 49-7 halftime lead with a quick 20 yard drive. 

WCU marched 71 yards in eight plays to extend their lead to 56-7 with 6:41 to play in the third quarter.  After a Griffin interception, the Rams added a 42 yard field goal late in the third quarter to push the advantage to 59-7. 

Seton Hill scored the final points of the game on their second possession of the fourth quarter.  SHU drove 77 yards in eight plays for the final touchdown of the game.  Colton Mitchell hit Ardell Brown with a 13 yard pass and then found Humphrey for 28 yards to the Rams one yard line.  Eric Finney finished the drive with a one yard touchdown run.  The Rams then ran off the final 9:05, taking two knees to end the game.

The Griffins produced 21 first downs in the contest and 354 yards of total offense.  SHU was 6-12 on third downs.  SHU passed for 286 yards but managed just 68 yards on the ground.

Ryan Barabe finished 13-19 for 131 yards.  Colton Mitchell threw for 120 yards on 6-10 passing.  Ardell Brown caught 8 passes for 112 yards.  Daquan Glover finished with 9 tackles.  Malik Scott added 8.

SHU will hit the road next week for the PSAC West opener at Slippery Rock.  Kick is set for 6 PM.
