SHU Opens Season with Victory over Mercyhurst

Seton Hill and Mercyhurst kicked off PSAC play on Thursday afternoon as the teams played their season openers.  The Griffins got a first half goal and made that goal stand up for a 1-0 season opening win.  Its the eleventh straight win at home for the Griffins.

Keeper Jessica Neill made two saves in the first twelve minutes to keep the game scoreless.  The Griffins had two shots on goal in the first twenty minutes but the Laker keeper was able to make two saves.  The Griffins got on the board in the 21st minute of the contest.  Madison Schwerzler hit a running Emily LoPresti whose one touch pass sprang Randi Selbekk one on one with the keeper.  Selbekk was able to slide the ball past the keeper into the right side of the net to give the Griffins a 1-0 lead.  The Lakers held a 6-5 advantage in shots in the first half.

Neill kept the game scoreless with a spectacular save just over three minutes into the second half.  The Lakers slipped a player thru the Griffin defense but Neill was able to make the save in a one on one attempt with the keeper.  The Griffins then had two chances within a minute to take a 2-0 lead in the 70th and 71st minute.  First, Italia Biondi's shot hit the cross bar then fourty five seconds later, LoPresti was stopped on a penalty kick.  With just over ten minutes to play in the half the Lakers got a golden opportunity to tie the game after a controversial corner kick call.  On the corner kick, the Griffin committed a foul in the box, giving the Lakers a penalty kick.  The Laker attempt hit the cross bar.  The Griffins were able to grind out the final ten minutes and secure the 1-0 win.

The Griffins outshot the Lakers 17-12 in the contest.  Neill ended the contest with 6 saves.  Biondi finished the game with 5 shots and LoPresti added four.

SHU will travel to West Chester to take on the #8 Golden Rams on Saturday afternoon in another PSAC contest.
