Griffins Advance to G-MAC Title Game with 16-7 Win

After getting off to a slow start in the first quarter, the Griffin men's lacrosse team advanced to the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Championship game with a 16-7 win over Wheeling Jesuit.  SHU is now 15-1 on the season.

Wheeling Jesuit took a 3-1 lead over the Griffins into the second quarter.  Logan Maloni scored the lone goal for the Griffins in the quarter.

The Griffins scored all five goals in the second quarter to take a 6-3 halftime lead.  Jack Moran scored twice while Zack Rusch, Adam Reimer and John Hofseth each added a goal. 

Jay Scerbo and Sean Stanners scored in the first minute of the second half to push the Griffins lead to 8-3 early in the third quarter.  When the Griffins took a two minute unreleasable penalty, the Griffins outscored the Cardinals by a 2-1 margin to take a 10-4 lead.  Hofseth, Shane Pettke and Ryan Manbeck scored in the final minutes of the third quarter to extend the SHU lead to 13-6 after three quarters. 

David St Clair, Dan Rupert and Moran closed out the scoring for the Griffins in the fourth quarter. 

Moran led the Griffins with 3 goals and 3 assists.  Hofseth added 3 goals and 2 assists.  Scerbo finished with 2 goals and was 17-26 in faceoffs.  Max Eismann finished with 12 saves in cage for the Griffins.

SHU will take on Mercyhurst in the finals on Saturday at noon. It will be a rematch of last year's final that the Griffins won on Mercyhurst's turf.
