Free 90's Cost Griffins Regional Final Trip

Seton Hill matched up with a familiar foe in Mercyhurst in the winner's bracket final of the NCAA Atlantic Regional on Sunday afternoon.  Seton Hill led 6-0 after two and a half innings but saw Mercyhurst score the final seven runs of the game as the Lakers defeated the Griffins 7-6 in 11 innings.  The Griffins let a golden chance to get to the regional final slip through their hands as they walked eleven and hit three more batters in the loss.  SHU drops to 33-21 on the season.  The loss snapped a twelve game winning streak for the Griffins.

SHU threatened in the top of the first inning with Chris Law getting a single with one out.  Tom McCarthy was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with one out.  Ryan Grieco then hit into a fielders choice with Law getting thrown out at the plate on the play for a double play.

The Griffins struck four times in the top of the second inning. Colton Carney started the inning off with a walk.  Mark Colella singled to put runners on first and second.  Adam Bankovich was hit by a pitch trying to bunt to load the bases.  Three straight walks to Carl Turner, Garret Vrbanic and Tyler Sullivan gave SHU a 3-0 lead.  After a strikeout, McCarthy's sacrifice fly extended the SHU lead to 4-0.

Seton Hill added two more runs in the third inning. Back to back doubles from Carney and Colella pushed the lead to 5-0.  The double from Colella would be the last hit the Griffins would get in the game.  Colella then scored from second base on a long sacrifice fly from Bankovich to push the lead to 6-0.

The Lakers got a run in the third and two in the fourth inning to cut the SHU lead to 6-3.  SHU starter Jared Kollar was able to get out of a second and third, no out situation with a line out, strikeout and ground out.

Reliever Neal McDermott loaded the bases with one out in the fifth but got a huge strikeout and pop out to end the threat.  Four more walks in the sixth inning allowed the Lakers to score two more runs and cut the lead to 6-5.

The Lakers used a hit batter, an error after a blown call at first base on a bunt then a passed ball to tie the game at six and send the game to extra innings.

Mercyhurst then won the game in the eleventh.  They used a lead off single, a sacrifice bunt and two walks to load the bases.  After a fielder's choice cut down a runner at the plate, the Lakers hit a ball to the gap on an 0-2 pitch to end the game.

Colella had two of the four Griffin hits.

The Griffins now need to win three games to win a regional title.  They must defeat the winner of the Millersville and Charleston game in game one on Monday, then defeat Mercyhurst twice.
