Seton Hill continued play in the NCAA Atlantic Regional with a second round matchup with former WVIAC foe Charleston in West Lawn, PA on Friday evening.
Perry Dellavalle set a new single season record for strikeouts as the Griffins advanced in the NCAA Atlantic Regional with a 9-0 win over the Golden Eagles. SHU has now won twelve in a row and is 33-20 on the season.
The Griffins got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second inning.
Mark Colella and
Colton Carney singled to open the inning. Carney was retired on a fielders choice from
Adam Bankovich. Bankovich stole second base. Colella scored on a groundout from
Carl Turner and then
Garret Vrbanic singled thru the left side of the infield to score Bankovich to give SHU a 2-0 lead.
SHU added four more runs in the third inning on just one hit.
Chris Law and
Tom McCarthy each walked to start the inning.
Ryan Grieco singled thru the left side to give SHU a 3-0 lead. McCarthy scored on an error to give SHU a 4-0 lead. Vrbanic was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and then Carney scored on a wild pitch as SHU took a 6-0 lead.
Seton Hill put the game away in the eighth inning with three runs. Vrbanic drove in a run and McCarthy added a two RBI hit to push the lead to 9-0.
Dellavalle worked eight scoreless innings to earn the win. He gave up just one hit while striking out eleven hitters. The eleven strikeouts give him 109 on the season, breaking the record of Alex Haines in 2012.
Vrbanic led the offense with 2 hits and 3 RBI. McCarthy added 2 RBI.
SHU will now meet Mercyhurst in the regional, scheduled for Saturday night at 7 PM.
