After nearly a four hour rain delay, the Griffins were able to finally get to play in their first round matchup with Shepherd in the NCAA Atlantic Regional.
Patrick Monteverde was nearly perfect in his start in leading the Griffins to a 4-0 win over Shepherd. SHU improves to 32-20 on the season.
Neither team was able to get their offense going over the first three innings as starters Ryan Potts and
Patrick Monteverde each allowed just one hit over the first three innings.
The Griffins got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning without a hit.
Chris Law drew a leadoff walk. He stole second. After an out,
Ryan Grieco drew a walk to put runners at first and second. On a wild pitch, Law moved to third with Grieco getting in a rundown between first and second. Law was able to score while Grieco was in the rundown giving SHU a 1-0 lead.
Colton Carney added to the lead in the fifth inning with a one out, solo shot to left field that hit off the top of the wall and bounced over the wall for a 2-0 Griffin lead.
Monteverde was able to strand two runners on base in the sixth with a groundout to end the Shepherd threat.
SHU stranded two runners on base after a two out single from
Tyler Sullivan and a double from Law.
Tom McCarthy lined out to left field to end the eighth inning.
The Griffins added two insurance runs in the ninth. Grieco was hit by a pitch and pinch ran for by
Andrew Chuba.
Mark Colella then reached on a bunt base hit.
Adam Bankovich moved both runners up with a bunt. Carney hit a sac fly to score Chuba and
Carl Turner's two out RBI single gave SHU a 4-0 lead.
Monteverde went 7.2 innings shutout innings, giving up just two hits and struck out 5 to earn the win.
Kenny Wells threw the final 1.1 innings to earn the save.
Sullivan led the offense with two hits. Carney drove in two runs.
SHU will now meet Charleston, a 3-0 winner over Millersville, on Friday evening at 4 PM, weather permitting.
