Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Swept at IUP

With a chance to solidify their spot in the PSAC Baseball Championships, the Griffins dealt a blow to those playoff chances by being swept at sixth place Indiana (PA) on Sunday afternoon.  IUP rallied from 4-0 down in game one for an 8-5 win and then scored six times in the first two innings of game two in an 8-5 win to complete the sweep.  The Crimson Hawks took three of four from the Griffins on the weekend.  SHU drops to 21-20 overall and 13-11 in PSAC West play.

The Griffins are currently two games ahead of fifth place California (PA) and hold the tiebreaker over the Vulcans should the teams tie.  SHU is currently three games ahead of sixth place IUP but do not hold the tiebreaker over the Crimson Hawks.  The top four teams in each division make the PSAC tournament.

In game one, SHU led 4-0 before the Crimson Hawks took a 5-4 lead with five runs in the third.  A solo homer from Tom McCarthy tied the game in the sixth but IUP answered right back with three runs in the bottom of the inning for the 8-5 win.  McCarthy also doubled and Chris Law added a homer in game one.

Adam Bankovich staked SHU to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game two with a two RBI double.  IUP then scored three times in each of their first two at bats to take a 6-2 lead.  SHU got the tying run to the plate in the seventh with one out but a pop up and a fielders choice ended the game.  Bankovich had two hits in game two.

SHU is scheduled to host Lock Haven on Tuesday afternoon in a non conference doubleheader.
