Softball Clinches PSAC Tournament Berth With Sweep Of California

GREENSBURG, Pa. - The Seton Hill University softball team clinched the #2 spot in the PSAC West with a sweep of rival California University of Pennsylvania.

// NOTABLES
• SHU moves to 21-13, 13-7 PSAC while California evens their record at 15-15 overall and 9-7 in PSAC play.
• The Griffins have won 20+ games in seven out of the last 10 seasons.
• Seton Hill is now 5-3 against California in the past two seasons.
Devyn Terry earned the win in game one. Terry pitched 6.0 innings in relief of starter Skyla Greco.
Nichole McClendon picked up her first win of the year in game two. McClendon threw all 7.0 innings, giving up just two runs while striking out four.
 
// GAME ONE KEY INNINGS
Top of the 2nd
•  Seton Hill jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with two runs in the 2nd inning. Terry started it off with a single to second base, and Paige Hertzog homered to left field for two RBI's.
Bottom of the 4th
• After SHU had scored a run in the third and fourth innings, California cut that deficit in half with two runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Bottom of the 5th
• Cal evened the game at 4-4 when they scored two more in the 5th inning.
Top of the 10th
• Seton Hill finally broke through when they scored go-head run in the top of the 10th inning. International Tiebreaker rules placed Paige Hertzog on second base to begin the inning. Ashley Perillo was out on a grounder to the pitcher, but Hertzog was able to move to third. Chelsea Rohan's single left field scored Hertzog to give SHU a 5-4 lead.
Bottom of the 10th
• Terry took care of business from the circle in the bottom half of the 10th. After International Tiebreaker rules placed Sachse on second to begin the inning, Fowler was out with a sac bunt that advanced Sachse to third. Pastor then flied out to left field, but it wasn't enough to advance Sachse. Wilson's swing at a 3-1 pitch ended up safely gobbled up at third base, and the Griffins hung on for the win.

// GAME TWO KEY INNINGS
Top of the 2nd
Chelsea Rohan singled through the left side with one-out. Abbie Thrower followed that up with a single through the right side to put Rohan on second base. Jenna Osikowicz reached on a fielder's choice, advancing Thrower to second but Rohan was out at third on the play. Brooke Bower's single to center field advanced Osikowicz to third and scored Thrower. Bower moved to second as the Vulcan's tried to get Thrower out at home. Laken Ryen's single to left field scored Bower and Osikowicz.

Top of the 3rd
• Terry's homer to straight-away center field gave SHU a 4-0 lead. Hertzog then singled to third base, and advanced to second after the next at-bat. Thrower's single up the middle with two-outs scored Hertzog and increased the lead to 5-0. 

Top of the 6th
• Leading 7-1, Brooke Bower's homer to left field scored Osikowicz and Seton Hill would cruise the rest of the way for the 9-2 victory. 

// UP NEXT
Seton Hill will have to wait to see how the rest of the PSAC West does with each remaining game played today and on Sunday. After conference play wraps up, the PSAC will announce the seedings for the tournament.
