Seton Hill began its four game weekend series against Pitt Johnstown with a doubleheader at Point Stadium on Friday afternoon. The Cats scored twice in the seventh inning of game one to walk off the Griffins with a 3-2 win. SHU responded with an 11-7 win in game two to earn the split. SHU is now 16-17 overall and 10-8 in PSAC West play.
Neither team got on the scoreboard until the fourth inning of game one.
Tom McCarthy led off the fourth inning with a solo shot to left field.
The Griffins made it 2-0 in the sixth. McCarthy struck out but reached on a wild pitch. He moved to second on a sac bunt from
Colton Carney. After a groundout, McCarthy scored when
Adam Bankovich reached on an error.
The Mountain Cats got a solo homer to lead off the sixth to cut the lead in half. SHU could not add on in the seventh, leaving the bases loaded.
UPJ then walked off the Griffins in the seventh. They used a leadoff error and a walk to get the inning going. After a strikeout, both runners moved up to put runners on second and third. After getting ahead of the hitter 0-2, the Cats worked the count to 3-2 and singled to drive in the two runs.
Chris Law and Carney each had two hits.
Patrick Monteverde worked 5.2 innings, giving up just 1 run on 6 hits while striking out 9 and walking just 1.
SHU scored twice in the first inning of game two. After two walks,
Tyler Sullivan scored on a groundout and McCarthy doubled in
Jordan Fiedor to give SHU a 2-0 lead. UPJ got one of those runs back in the bottom of the second inning. They tied the score at two on a wild pitch in the third inning.
Back to back doubles from
Austin Braendel and
Garret Vrbanic put SHU back in front in the fifth inning. The Griffins then broke the game open in the sixth as they sent twelve batters to the plate, scoring six times to take a 9-2 lead. McCarthy had a two RBI single in the inning.
McCarthy,
Carl Turner and Vrbanic each had two hits for SHU.
Jared Kollar went 5.1 innings to earn the win. He struck out nine in the win.
George Coyle got the final out of the game to earn his first collegiate save.
SHU will complete the four game set with a home doubleheader starting at 12:30 PM on Saturday. The team will take part in a team head shaving event after game two in support of Vs. Cancer.
