Game Recap: Baseball |

Wasted Opportunities Costly in 4-3 Loss to UMSL

Seton Hill looked to end a two game slide with a single game against the University of Missouri-St Louis on Tuesday afternoon in Kissimmee, FL.  For the second straight day the Griffins stranded 13 on base and dropped their straight contest with a 4-3 loss to the Tritons.  SHU drops to 4-3 overall.

The Griffins got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the first inning.  After two outs, Tom McCarthy walked and stole second.  He moved to third when Tyler Peterson reached on an error then scored on a double steal as the Griffins took a 1-0 lead without a hit.

In the third and fourth innings, the Griffins wasted scoring threats.  SHU had two runners thrown out on the bases in the third and still left the bases loaded.  SHU also left the bases loaded in the fourth.

UMSL tied the game with a run in the top of the sixth inning.  The Griffins again loaded the bases in the sixth but a double play ended the inning.

SHU got singles from Peterson and Parker Denny to put runners on second and third with one out in the eighth but a strikeout and a pop out stranded the runners.

UMSL took advantage of Griffin walks and errors in the ninth as they scored three runs on just one hit in the top of the ninth inning to take a 4-1 lead.  The Griffins walked four and hit a batter and added two errors in the inning.

The Griffins battled in the bottom of the ninth inning, getting the winning run to second base but could not get the game winning hit, again stranding the bases loaded.  With two outs, Tyler Sullivan and McCarthy doubled to start the rally and cut the lead to 4-2.  Peterson singled to put runners on first and third.  Craig Lewis and Parker Denny drew walks to force in a run and cut the lead to 4-3.  A flyout to left field on an 0-0 pitch ended the game.

Colton Carney and Peterson each had two hits.

SHU will be off on Wednesday before returning to action on Thursday against Ohio Valley.
