Seton Hill opened its Florida trip in Kissimmee, Florida with a pair of games on Sunday afternoon in the Osceola County Sport Complex. The Griffins used a 10 run second inning in route to a 22-9 victory over Missouri-St Louis, which gave head coach
Marc Marizzaldi his 500
th career win. The Griffins then suffered their first loss of the season with a 13-4 defeat to Rockhurst in game two of the doubleheader. SHU is now 4-1 on the season.
The Griffins took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
Craig Lewis led off with a line drive to left field. He moved to second on a bunt from
Garret Vrbanic and scored on a single by
Tom McCarthy.
Seton Hill took advantage of a few UMSL errors in the top of the second inning, scoring 10 unearned runs. The big hits in the inning were a two run double from Vrbanic, a three run triple from
Mark Colella and a three run homer from
Parker Denny to take an 11-0 lead.
SHU added two more runs in the fifth to push their lead to 14-3 over the Tritons.
The Griffins added a seven spot in the sixth inning.
Tyler Peterson hit his first collegiate home run, a grand slam to give SHU a 21-3 lead.
Lewis led the Griffins in game one with three hits. Vrbanic, McCarthy, Vilk and Peterson all added two hits.
Nicholas Behm worked over three innings to earn the win in relief of starter
Patrick Monteverde.
In the second game against Rockhurst, the Hawks scored five times on just three hits to take a 5-0 lead over the Griffins after just one inning of play. The Griffins got two runs back in the second inning on an RBI triple from
Colton Carney and an RBI double from
Craig Lewis.
Rockhurst got those two runs back and added two more in the second inning as they took a 9-2 lead after just two innings. The Hawks added four more runs in the third inning to take a 13-2 lead after three innings.
Colton Carney singled in
Tyler Sullivan and then scored later on a wild pitch as SHU cut the lead to 13-4. SHU loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth but a strikeout ended the threat.
Lewis and Carney each had three hits in the loss.
Chris Law and Sullivan added two hits.
The Griffins will continue their Florida trip on Monday when they take on Grand Valley at 2 PM.
