Griffins Split Road DH at Slippery Rock

The Griffins headed to Slippery Rock looking to win their opening PSAC West series from the Rock.  Seton Hill scored six times in the sixth inning to blow open game one in a 10-2 win.  The stranding runners bug came back to bite the Griffins in game two as they split the doubleheader with a 2-1 loss.  SHU stranded 8 runners in the first four innings.  SHU is now 7-11 overall and 2-2 in PSAC action.

The Rock opened the scoring in game one with a single run in the bottom of the first inning.

SHU took the lead with two runs in the second inning.  Colton Carney led off the inning with a triple and scored on a wild pitch.  Ryan Grieco singled and scored on a Dan Wukich sacrifice fly.

The Griffins added two more runs in the third.  Tyler Sullivan drew a leadoff walk.  He moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single from Tom McCarthyChris Law then tripled in McCarthy to give SHU a 4-1 lead.  The Rock got a run back in the fifth inning to trim the lead to 4-2.

Seton Hill broke the game open in the sixth with a six spot.  Grieco and Mark Colella singled and Garret Vrbanic reached on a fielders choice to load the bases with no one out.  Wukich singled in a run and Carl Turner followed with a 2 RBI double to push the lead to 7-2.  Sullivan executed a squeeze play and McCarthy's sacrifice fly extended the lead to 9-2.  An error allowed the tenth run to score.

Don McWreath earned the win with a complete game effort.  He gave up the two runs on six hits.  Colella and Law each had two hits.  McCarthy, Turner and Wukich each drove in two runs.

The Griffins got on the scoreboard first in game two.  After an out, McCarthy singled and moved to third on two wild pitches.  Chris Law walked and moved to second on a steal with one out.  A pop out was the second out but McCarthy was able to score on a wild pitch to give SHU a 1-0 lead.

Slippery Rock scored their only two runs in the bottom of the first inning.  Three straight singles to start the game loaded the bases.  The Rock used a sacrifice fly and an errant pickoff throw to take the 2-1 lead.

SHU loaded the bases in the second inning with two outs, but a fielders choice ended the inning.  The Griffins stranded two more runners in the third inning when a groundout ended the inning.

Seton Hill also threatened in the fourth inning.  Wukich and Vrbanic were hit by pitches to put runners on first and second base with no one out and the top of the order coming up.  A flyout, strikeout and fielders choice ended the inning with no one advancing past second base.

McCarthy was the lone Griffin with two hits.

SHU will return to PSAC West play on Friday afternoon when they travel to Gannon for a doubleheader
