The Griffins closed out their trip to Holly Springs, NC with a nine inning contest against West Liberty on Sunday. SHU used some timely hitting an another strong pitching performance to go 3-0 on the weekend with a 5-2 win over the Hilltoppers.
The Hilltoppers took a 1-0 lead before you could blink with a leadoff homer to right field in the top of the first inning. The Griffins were able to tie the score in the bottom of the first without a hit.
Craig Lewis led off and reached on a three base error. He then scored on a ground out from
Tyler Sullivan.
Seton Hill scored their second run of the game in the second inning, again without a hit. After an out
Jarrett Peters walked and advanced to third on a wild pitch. He scored on a sacrifice fly from
MP Buckley to give SHU a 2-1 lead.
Griffin starter
Jared Kollar settled down after the leadoff homer and struck out five batters over the first three innings. The Griffins got their first hit of the game in the third inning when
Tom McCarthy hit a solo homer to left field.
SHU added on in the seventh inning. After two outs Sullivan was hit by a pitch. McCarthy followed with a single. Sullivan scored on a double from
Ryan Grieco and McCarthy then scored on a wild pitch to give SHU a 5-1 advantage. West Liberty hit a leadoff homer in the eighth for the final run of the game.
Kollar earned the win with six innings of work. He gave up a run on three hits and struck out seven.
Neal McDermott threw a scoreless ninth for his first save. McCarthy and Grieco each had two hits.
SHU will be off for the week before heading to Florida next weekend for their spring break trip.
