Seton Hill opened their 2018 season in Holly Springs, NC as they took on PSAC and Atlantic Region foe Shippensburg. The Griffins were powered by the strong pitching of
Perry DellaValle and
Patrick Monteverde in a doubleheader sweep of the Raiders. Seton Hill won both games by identical 2-0 scores to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Dellavalle kicked off his season in style by striking out the side in the first inning. The Griffins had two runners on with two outs in the second inning but a groundout to first ended the inning. The Griffins broke thru in the top of the third inning. Crag Lewis started the inning with a triple. After an out, he scored on a sacrifice fly by
Tom McCarthy.
The Griffins added another run in the fourth. After an out,
Tyler Peterson was hit by a pitch. He scored on a double from
Tyler Sullivan to give the Griffins a 2-0 lead.
Kenny Wells took over for Dellavalle in the seventh and got two strikeouts and a fly out to end the game.
Dellavalle got his first win of the season with six shutout innings. He gave up just two hits and struck out seven. Lewis led the offense with three hits, Peterson added two.
In the bottom of the first inning of game two, Lewis led off with a double and
Garret Vrbanic was hit by a pitch. The inning ended quickly when both runners were caught stealing. Ship had a runner on third base with one out in the second but Monteverde got a groundout and flyout to end the inning.
The Griffins cracked the scoreboard in game two in the third inning. Sullivan drew a leadoff walk. He moved to second after one out on a wild pitch. After the second out, Lewis was hit by a pitch. Sullivan scored on a Vrbanic single and Lewis then scored when McCarthy singled to give SHU a 2-0 lead.
SHU looked to add to its lead in the fourth as they had runners on second and third with no one out. A short fly out, a pop out to second and a strikeout ended the inning.
After a leadoff walk in the seventh, Vrbanic turned a spectacular double play to get the Griffins out of trouble and the win.
Monteverde went six innings, giving up five hits while striking out five.
Michael Bryja earned the save with a scoreless seventh. McCarthy had two of the four Griffin hits.
SHU will close out their trip to NC on Sunday when they take on West Liberty in a nine inning contest.
