SHU Drops PSAC Opener at Shippensburg

The Griffins made the trip across the turnpike to open PSAC play at Shippenburg on Saturday afternoon.  Shippensburg used a 15-0 run at the end of the third quarter and into the fourth quarter to take control of the game and defeat the Griffins by the score of 77-67.  SHU is now 3-2 overall and 0-1 in PSAC play. 

Shippensburg took an early 6-2 lead before a three pointer from Samantha Kosmacki cut the lead to 6-5 with five minutes to play in the first quarter.  The Raiders then used a 7-0 run to build the lead to 17-6 with 2:26 to play in the quarter.  A three point play from Courtney Cecere at the end of the quarter cut the Raider lead to 19-11 after one quarter of play. 

SHU only scored two points over the first five minutes of the second quarter but held Ship to just five as the Raiders pushed their lead back to eleven.  Two baskets from Cecere, a three pointer from Megan Marecic and a free throw from Cheyenne Trest cut the Ship lead to 26-22 with 1:37 to play in the half.  Ship took a 30-23 lead into the halftime break. 

Back to back three pointers from Marecic trimmed the lead to 40-33 with 5:55 to play in the third quarter.  Another three pointer from Marecic and layups from Lexi Civittolo and Katie Nolan gave SHU their first lead of the game at 46-44 with 1:23 to play in the quarter.  Ship closed the quarter on an 8-0 run to take a 52-46 lead into the fourth quarter. 

The Raiders continued their run by scoring the first seven points of the fourth quarter built their lead back to 13 at 59-46 with 8:24 to play in the contest.  Back to back threes from Marecic and a basket from Trest trimmed the lead to 60-59 with 5:28 to play in the contest.  Another layin from Trest cut the advantage to two at 63-61 with 4:39 to play.  Cecere hit two free throws twice in the last three minutes to cut the lead to one, the last time at 68-67 with 1:41 to play.  SHU then missed it's last four shots as the Raiders put the game away at the free throw line.

Marecic led the Griffins with a season high 26 points.  She also added 8 rebounds.  Civittolo finished with 13 points.  Cecere finished with a double double of 12 points and 10 rebounds.  Trest finished with 9 points.

SHU will return to action next Saturday when they host Millersville in a PSAC crossover.
