Griffins Advance in NCAA Atlantic Regional with 3-1 Win over Cal

Seton Hill opened the 2018 NCAA Atlantic Regional in Wheeling against PSAC foe California (PA) on Thursday afternoon.  Seton Hill won the first two sets and then closed out the match in the fourth to advance in the NCAA Regional.  SHU has now won twelve in a row to improve to 25-8.  Cal falls to 20-13. 
 
The Griffins took an early 3-2 lead on a setter dump from Brynn Fleury and an ace from Taylor Sabol.  A kill from Viktoria Farian and a block from Leah Bisignani and Erin Parks gave SHU a 7-5 lead.  Another Fleury kill and Rachel Satira/Bisignani block pushed the lead to 10-6.  A third kill from Farian extended the lead to 11-6, completing a 7-1 run, and forced a Vulcan timeout.  After Cal cut the lead to 14-12, the Griffins ran off two straight to take a 16-12 lead.  Another Farian kill extended the lead to 18-13.  Cal then cut the lead to 18-16 before Farian pushed the lead back to 19-16.  Cal trimmed the lead to 20-19 but Farian again had an answer.  Jillian Livorse followed with a kill and SHU led 22-19.  Livorse ended the set with a kill and SHU took the first set 25-21.  Farian posted seven kills for the Griffins in the set. 
 
California opened the second set with a 3-0 run before Farian gave the Griffins their first point.  She followed with an ace to cut the lead to 3-2.  A kill from Jessica Hanson and a Vulcan hitting error tied the set at five.  Back to back Bisignani kills evened the set at seven.  Satira answered a two point Cal run with a kill to trim the lead to 11-10.  Another Farian ace tied the set at 11.  She followed that with an another ace and SHU led 12-11.  Satira and Cameron Baril increased the Griffins lead to 15-12.  A kill from Sidney Chapman pushed the lead to 16-12 as SHU went on another 7-1 run.  Another Baril kill gave SHU an 18-15 advantage.  A solo stuff from Satira extended the lead to 20-16.  Cal trimmed the lead to 20-18 but SHU rallied and ran off two straight points to take a 22-18 lead and force another Vulcan timeout.  Hanson and Farian combined on a block and SHU led 23-18.  Satira gave SHU set point at 24-19.  Satira ended the set and gave SHU a 2-0 lead with a 25-20 second set win. 
 
Satira came out swinging in the third set and gave SHU a quick 1-0 lead.  Chapman and Bisignani combined on a block and SHU led 5-2 early in the third set.  Bisigani ended a 2-0 Cal run with a kill to give SHU a 6-4 lead.  Two kills from Baril extended the lead to 8-5.  Four straight from the Vulcans tied the set at nine.  Satira and Bisignani ended the run with a block.  Cal then ran off four straight to take a 15-11 lead.  Two more points for the Vulcans forced the Griffins to take their second timeout of the set down 17-11.    An ace from Chapman cut the Vulcan lead to 20-16 and the Vulcans used their last timeout.  Another ace cut the lead to 20-17.  A Farian kill cut the lead to 22-19.  The Vulcans took the third set 25-19 to trim the lead to 2-1. 
 
Cal took an early 6-4 lead in the fourth set.  Two straight from Farian tied the set at six.  A Bisignani ace gave SHU a 7-6 lead.  Two kills from Satira gave SHU a 9-8 advantage.  A Taylor Sabol ace pushed the lead to 10-8.  Farian out of the back extended the lead to 11-8.  Chapman put down an overpass and SHU led 12-8 and the Vulcans took a timeout.  Hanson gave SHU a five point advantage with a klll and another Sabol ace made it 14-8.  Hanson put another one down and SHU led 15-8 and the Vulcans used another timeout.  Farian and Parks had back to back kills to push the lead to 17-9.  Farian got the Griffins to 20 first and SHU led 20-11.  SHU ended the match with a 25-12 fourth set win.
 
Viktoria Farian led the Griffins with 18 kills. Rachel Satira finished with 14. Leah Bisignani added 7 kills and Cameron Baril finished with 6 kills. Bisignani led SHU with 7 blocks. Hannan Moeller led with 18 digs. Brynn Fleury with 22 assists, Taylor Sabol added 21.
 
SHU will now meet number two seed Gannon on Friday evening at 5 PM in the NCAA Atlantic Regional Semifinal.
